PC Game Sales Down In 2008

The NPD group released the retail sales figures for 2008 to GameDaily. PC game sales netted $701 million, down 17% from 2007 PC game sales. The data used in the NPD study doesn't take into account micro transactions and subscription based revenue. The report states:

It's important to keep in mind, however, that this NPD data concerns retail data only and does not include sales of digitally downloaded games, micro-transactions, online subscriptions, etc. The NPD Group recently started paying more attention to online revenue with its quarterly subscription tracker, but this data does not include that. NPD is expected to release more in-depth information on the PC games market next week.

In my humble opinion, I think the PC market is an evolving one rather than a declining one. Heavy piracy and increased broadband penetration has lead many publishers to look at digital distribution more seriously.

I think making really good PC games is a lot more rewarding than consoles games as sales generally could be stronger for a much longer period of time. Especially with good support from developers, PC games overtime can potentially sell more than most console games

PS : No one looks at life time sales of games.
