Cryostasis WiIl Have You Fighting Against The Cold

Matt Wales from IGN UK wrote a preview piece that highlighted the fact that you actually have to gauge your body temperature in this game. Cryostasis is a first person action/shooter developed by 1c company(from Russia) that will have you also travel back in time to solve puzzles. According to Matt Wales:

Firstly, there's the all-pervasive cold – be that frost constantly dancing around the peripheral vision on your helmet or spidering up the frozen walls of your nautical tomb. It's not just there for visual finery though. You see, the environment, and its effect on your body temperature, is the game's only concession to anything resembling a health meter.

As you sink deeper into the hulk of the North Wind and the cold sets in, your temperature gauge slowly plummets until it reaches critical - and game over. The only way to counter this is to seek out heat sources - ranging from naked flames to electric bulbs - and bask in their glow for a few seconds.

Alongside that, there's your stamina gauge which affects everything from the strength of your attacks to your sprinting distance, again depleting with the cold and increasing as you flex your muscles over time.

He wrote that Cryostasis is deeply flawed in other aspects. It has technical and control issues but predicts it may be a sleeper hit. Cryostasis is set for a Q2 2009 release.
