Call of Duty: Elite Revealed - Nothing More Than An Online Service

At first, I thought Call of Duty: Elite might be the free to play Call of Duty, but it turns out I was wrong. Call of Duty: Elite is Activision premium subscription service that will be available for anyone that owns Call of Duty: Black Ops or those that buy the upcoming Modern Warfare 3. Elite subscribers will receive extra stats breakdown from matches, analysis of your plays, strategy tips, maps, and even be able to take part in exclusive competitions. There’ll be a free and a paid subscription for this service and premium elite subscribers will be able to get DLC’s(that will usually be paid DLC for everyone else). They insist that this is completely optional and that the core multiplayer experience will not cost you anything other than what you paid for the game. You can sign up for the beta here

The Secret World Developer Video Diary #1 - Story And Missions

Funcom has released the first video developer diary for The Secret World. The Secret World is a modern day ‘real world’ MMORPG in which demons have over run the world. But there’s more to it. There are secret societies, a mythical underground city which you have to investigate. One of the big things they’ve talked about this game is making the quests feel like a proper narrative rather than collect 10 demon ears or something to that extent. Watch the developer diary below and see what’s all the fuss about…

Star Wars The Old Republic Trooper Progression Trailer - You'll Take My Life But I'll Take Yours Too

Star Wars The Old Republic is the name of the game(you might know it) and the class being shown off here is the Trooper. While I think a lot of people will play as a Jedi or Sith(it’s a Star Wars game after all), I think Bioware has done a good job of making a regular old trooper look cool. Release date is up in the air at the moment. Projected to be out end of this year, but Bioware has said they aren’t sure themselves. Watch the video below…

This Week’s Gaming - Tactical Strategy Game Week

It’s a coincidence that I have two tactical strategy games to play through this week. One, a game that has had a very lengthy beta and another a bit more rough around the edges(presentation wise). This week my Avadon: The Black Fortress review should be published. My impression of Terraria would also be up this week as well. Behold, games I'll be diving in this week...

Dead Island 20 Minute Gameplay Walkthrough - She's A Zombie Killing Ninja

Remember that 11 minute gameplay walkthrough with developer commentary? Now you can watch a full 20 minutes of that same walkthrough, without the commentary. It certainly doesn't seem like any other zombie games. Looks a lot more tactical as you need to time you dodges and attacks at the right time. I'm surprised that a lady wearing heels can dodge like that though. Watch the video below...

Sengoku Video Developer Diary #2 - Factions

The second part of the video developer diary for Sengoku, Paradox's Japan themed grand strategy game is out now. This time they talk about the factions involved in the Snegoku Jidai era of Japan. The three different factions that your Daimyo can decide whether to be good friends with. Each giving you some form of benefit. You choice can cause a religious conflict if you are not careful... or maybe that is what you were looking for. Watch the developer diary below...

Sanctum Review: Tower (and guns) Defence

Sanctum is a brand new (Well, brand new with DLC at least.. Ok, It's about a month old already, but I've only recently gotten this urge to play games in this genre) game in the rather “casual-centric” genre of Tower Defence games. Tower Defence is very simple: There's a giant horde of evils trying to get past you. Your job is to stop them indirectly by erecting various towers that will annihilate those all who come pass. Despite being all kinds of evil, they come in waves to run past you and they don't even try attacking you, so as to maintain some sort of dignity while being shot to little bits. There's nothing else to explain about TD games really, and Sanctum continues very much in that same vein as other tower defence games. Although, there's a twist...

Battlefield 3 Behind The Scenes Look With Some New Footage - Exclusive From EA Pwned Internet Show

An EA produced internet show that highlights EA games(well, naturally) got an exclusive behind the scenes look at DICE on their next title, Battlefield 3. The show has got some never before seen gameplay footage(they showed a short bit of an APC firing away at a building) as well as some engine videos and interviews with key people in the development of the game. Want to see how Karkand, the classic battlefield 2 map looks in Battlefield 3? Watch this video below…

Pocket Change - Ubisoft Week & Memorial Day

This week, Steam is having a Ubisoft game a day sales(all Ubisoft title has been 33% off the entire week). Many digital distribution platforms are having a memorial day sales which has war games that has had their prices slashed. If you've been waiting on Total War: Shogun 2, GET IT! It's 33% off as well on Steam. It's already got its DIrect X 11 patch and runs like a dream(a new Ikko Ikki faction DLC has also been released, which I think I'll skip).  Also, Frozen Synapse is out on Steam now and there's a 20% discount for a 2 pack(they only sell 2 packs). Excellent little indie game. Check out the deals of the week below...

SHIFT 2 Unleashed PC DLC’s Confirmed! Details Coming Soon

Is this more hot air? Or something real? EA confirmed on the official NFS Facebook page that they have confirmed the release of the paid DLC’s for SHIFT 2 Unleashed for the PC. This was what was posted on the Facebook page, “For all our PC players, we JUST got official confirmation that the SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED PDLC will be available on PC! More details coming as soon as we have them”. So far, they’ve released two DLC’s for SHIFT 2, the first; GT Legends and the latest; SpeedHunters Pack(all of them for the consoles… so far). Check out the trailer for the latest DLC below…

Alice: Madness Returns Combat Trailer Features Weird Enemies

Like a Samurai flying insect thing and a giant monster with baby heads and multiple hands. Despite the odd(but remarkable) visuals, seems pretty standard fare action platformer stuff to me. Alice: Madness Returns releases on June 14th. Will it live up to the original classic? I hope so. View the trailer below…

UPDATE FIFA 12 Impact Engine Trailer - Not Used In The PC Version

UPDATE: Breaking news. I found out that EA are not going to be using this technology for the PC version. In this Eurogamer write up, EA announced that the PC, Wii and old generation(and hand held) consoles will not be using this new engine. I'm befuddled by this decision. Thank Bluesnews.

EA unveils its first gameplay trailer for FIFA 12. Highlighting what they call the Impact engine. It shows a lot of football players colliding with each other and tumbling down. I think it’s meant to show that it looks a lot more realistic. I'm pretty sure this technology was something EA had already worked on in the Madden NFL series. Check out the trailer below…

Valve Left For Dead? - Turtle Rock Goes With THQ For Their Next Project

Turtle Rock Studios was the guys that brought to you Left 4 Dead. Operating as an independent company, Turtle Rock Studios as well (as the Left 4 Dead IP) got acquired by Valve, their publisher for the game. They went with the name of Valve South. However, due to some unknown reason, they left Valve just after the launch of Left 4 Dead and reformed themselves as an independent studio. THQ announced that they will be publishing Turtle Rock Studios next title that is due out in 2013. No info on this new title other than it is ‘set to make a similar impact in the multiplayer space’. Valve announced back in May 2010 that Turtle Rock were linking up with Valve to work on a new game. There hasn’t been any update on the status of that project(although Turtle Rock has worked on recent Left 4 Dead DLC’s). I’m guessing whatever they had with Valve has fallen through. Exactly what went on behind the scene with Valve and Turtle Rock… we’ll never know.

Pride of Nations Video Walkthrough - Britannia Rules The Waves

Just what the hell is Pride of Nations? No idea what a grand strategy game mix with a war game would be like? Paradox has released this developer walkthrough of the game. A good move if you ask me… since the game is quite daunting. Still, a lot is not explained. It's more like an overview than an actual walkthrough. I'll be trying this out since I have a review copy. But don't expect a review any time soon. Video walkthrough below...

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine Developer Video Diary - Slicing & Dicing Orks

Relic has released a second developer video diary for their upcoming action game, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine. This video focuses on the combat which promises to be fast, gory and hopefully… awesome. A Space Marine never employs stealth or anything of that sorts. Instead they always make a grand entrance on the battlefield leading the front. Space Marine is out on September 6th(confirmed for the PC). Check out the latest dev video diary below…

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online Announced - Ubisoft Entering The Free To Play Market

Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online(based on the Advance Warfighter universe, so it’s the future) today. PC Gamer did a hand on impression of the game which you can read here. According to that preview, it feel like a mix of Call of Duty with Team Fortress 2(with cover based mechanic). Ghost Recon Online will have three different classes; Assault, Recon and Specialists. It has the whole get new weapons and upgrades that you find in most online shooters. Ubisoft are claiming that they wont be selling weapons. Instead they will do the MMO thing of allowing you to purchase extra space for your inventory(yes… there is an inventory), or consumables like grenades. This will be interesting. A major game developer making a free to play shooter. They've release a trailer. Watch it below…

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Gameplay Trailer - The Annual Biggest Gaming Franchise Returns

It’s back! The biggest gaming franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has got a brand spanking new gameplay trailer. They also announced that Sledgehammer Games(headed by the people behind the first Dead Space) will be involved n the development. Although it is unclear just how will they be involved. This is Infinity Ward’s baby so I’m not sure who is doing what this time. Perhaps Infinity Ward will focus on the multiplayer aspect of the game. The games release date has been confirmed for November 8th. Trailer below…

Dead Island Gameplay Video - 11 Minutes Worth Of Gameplay Footage

Following the first proper trailer for Dead Island, Gametrailers.com has posted an exclusive gameplay video spanning a good 11 minutes of zombie killing. The video also has some some commentary by Vincent Kummel(from Deep Silver, the publisher for this game). Looks like a first person shooter, mixed with Dead Rising's crafting your weapons. Gameplay footage below...

This Week’s Gaming - Terrari What?

There’s a indie game titled Terraria that’s becoming a bit of a hit on Steam. It’s the top seller on Steam despite the The Witcher 2 being released on the same week, which says a lot about how many copies of the game has been sold on Steam.

Storm Debut Trailer - Build A Hippies Paradise

A puzzle games involving nature, plants and seeds. Sounds like a hippies paradise… except storms. It’s a downloadable game for the PC and consoles by Eko Software that is due out summer 2011(going for USD10). Living in Malaysia, I’ve had way too many bad experiences with storms(fried modems/routers) and this trailer just freaks me out. But it’s for a good cause, growing trees… aahhh. Trailer below…

Torchlight II Developer Diary - Making Of The World Of Torchlight II

Torchlight II Lead Level Designer, Patrick Blank has written a developer diary over at the official site. He goes into detail on the level design process over at Runic Games and mostly talks about the environment in Torchlight II. Torchlight II introduces new overworld areas that are much larger than the largest areas from the first game. These are connected by smaller narrower passes. They’re also making levels a lot more randomised now and you’ll have dungeons that are now fully randomised. There’s also written QA bit they had with the community which you can read here. Torchlight II is due out summer this year.

FIFA 12 Feature Video Shaky Cam Footage - Intentionally Leaked? Why So Many Leaks?

It’s EA’s turn to get bit by leaked game information. The upcoming FIFA 12, their yearly football franchise sports game has had a video describing the new features leaked. I’m not sure what to think about all these leaks now. Intentionally or a real leak? Who cares! If you’re a big FIFA fan(the game that is, not the football association), you want to see this video to know what’s new. Note: the video seems like its from a very early version and the footage is quite blurry. Probably from a closed doors demo. Video below…

Shocking News! Dragon Age III In The Works

If it wasn’t made apparent in the ending of Dragon Age II, new rumour has surfaced that Bioware are currently hiring new talent to work on Dragon Age III. Senior Director of Creative Development at Bioware, Allistair McNally teeted that “I'm looking for exceptional environment artists to join me at #BioWare Edmonton, Canada to work on #DragonAge3”. Confirming the shocking news that Bioware are indeed working on a Dragon Age III. The big question for Dragon Age III however has to be, does your Grey Warden character from the first game make an appearance?(or any other Grey Warden) What will Hawke’s(Dragon Age 2 protagonist) role be? If Mass Effect 3 is any indication, Bioware might just reunite the cast of both games.

UPDATE Call of Duty: Black Ops Escalation Map Pack Coming To The PC On June 2nd

UPDATE: Activision announced that PC gamers will be able to purchase the Escalation DLC on June 2nd. While a price point was not announced, it is safe to assume that it will be at the same price the first DLC was released for. Expect it to be sold at USD$15 on Steam.

The next map pack for Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops will arrive on XBOXlive on May 3rd. It should be out for the PC in June. It will feature 4 new maps and one new zombie mode map. One of the maps takes place in a Zoo and another, a hotel. The Treyarch guys give us some info on the 4 new maps(they didn’t talk about the new zombie map, Call of The Dead). Escalation trailer below…

Hellgate: London Free To Play Launching Later This Year

Hellgate: London was a disaster of a game at launch and it took down its developer, Flagship Studios, together with it. HanbitSoft has since got the rights to the game and has been allowing Korean gamers to play it using a free to play model. HanbitSoft announced today that they will be bringing Hellgate: London as a free to play game to North America later this year with a closed beta planned to go live on June 3rd and ending on June 5th(rather short test run). I’m going to assume that an international release wont be far off together with the North American release. If you’d like to see how they have evolved the game, you’ll get your chance this year(hopefully).

ArmA 3 Announced - Realistic Shooting In The Face Game

Bohemia Interactive put up the official site to their realistic man shooting simulation Arma 3(this means they are working on ArmA 3). It is slated as releasing in summer 2012. The feature list is a bunch of stuff that was said about ArmA 2 as well so it means nothing. We wont know just how much of an improvement it will be until we see the game in action. The only thing I spotted that seems new is coop play. Check out the feature list and screenshots for ArmA 3 below…

Modern Warfare 3 Leak Turned Into A ‘Marketing Win’ So Says Activision

Speaking to GameIndutry.biz, Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg said “While it's definitely not cool to steal other people's intellectual property, and while it's definitely not cool to leak stuff that's not yours, there are ways that you can respond that actually turn the lemons into lemonade”. He said that’s exactly what they accomplished on Friday. “Through our various channels, through Robert Bowling at Infinity Ward, through Facebook and through our YouTube channel, we reached out to our fans and we said, 'Look, we didn't schedule this. This wasn't something we had planned. But everyone seems excited, so we're just going to roll with it. So here they are” he added. He admits that the leak seemed like it had deep access to information but revealed that they have not figured out the source of the leak yet and that internal investigation was still underway. Listen people, when life gives you lemons… don’t make lemonade.

Cities In Motion: Tokyo Expansion Pack Releasing May 31st

Cities In Motions, the Transport Tycoon inspired strategy game by Collosal Order is getting a new expansion pack. Cities in Motion: Tokyo will be adding a 4 new single player scenarios in Tokyo(I’ve you didn’t get the hint in the title) and will also introduce seven new vehicles. Paradox are also releasing a Magicka Nippon DLC which add some new Japanese themed items. Best bit, 50% of proceeds go to the Japan Relief Fund, so it’s for a good cause too. Both these bundles come out on May 31st. No price announced for them yet.

Dawn of Fantasy Developer Diary Part 2 - Treacherous Elves

Dawn of Fantasy(was tempted to say Dawn of War there) is an upcoming MMORTS by Reverie World Studios. The devs have released part 2 of a video developer diary series introducing you to the game and what Dawn of Fantasy will offer players. Part 2 introduces Kingdom Wars, a single player conquer the world type campaign(similar to Rise of Nations I suppose). So far, they’ve showed a lot of city sieges which is to be expected for any game that has a strategic map and cities(I’m sure open battles are also in the game like any Total War like game). This isn’t a free to play game. The devs say the price will be comparable to current PC RTS titles. Game’s coming out in June. Watch both developer diaries below…

Valve Wont Be Revealing Anything At E3 This Year - Half Life Fan Boys Heartbroken

Rock Paper Shotgun reported that Valve has sent out emails to the press that they wont be showing any title at this year’s E3. Awww no Half Life 3 Episode 3 reveal just yet. There’s been some leaked stuff about Valve bringing in people for focus testing and such so we know for a fact that they are indeed working on it. But you’ll just got to wait a little longer for news about our beloved Half Life 2. Not going to happen next month I’m afraid. Thanks RPS... I guess for bringing this sad news. Not bitter at all...

Storm: Frontline Nation - Turn Based Strategy Game With A Stormy Title

Seriously, people have to come up with better names for these strategy games. Storm: Frontline Nation is a turn based strategy game where the United States, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Russia go head to head for a military conflict to control dwindling resources. It has the same Total War concept of having a strategic map and tactical battles. It will be out on June 28th at retail for USD$29.99 at retail and online distribution. I’ve also found this video preview by Gamestar(it’s in German) about the game. Don’t understand a thing but looks interesting. The combat looks cool. You keep your artillery at the back and move your frontline troops forwards. battles look very Panzer General like. Video below...

The Sims 3: Generations Producer Walkthrough Video - Taking You A Step Closer To Real Life

Wondering what the upcoming expansion to The Sims 3 adds to the game? Watch and listen to what the makers of this expansion pack has got to say about it. Recording footage from the game to watch in a virtual TV seems like a very impractical feature… it’s cool though(but a little gimicky). The expansion pack fleshes out the experiences sims get throughout their lives. Generations will be available on June 3rd. Check out a preview of the stuff you can do in The Sims 3: Generations below…

Renegade Ops - Blow S**t Up Real Good

SEGA announced Renegades Ops, a vehicular combat action game. Developed by Avalanche Studios, the people who made the Just Cause game, it’s a downloadable game that will be released on XBLA, PSN and Steam in summer 2011. Shoot other stuff real good! Also supports coop action. The game looks quite stunning for a downloadable game and looks like it’s taken right out of a just cause game(with the island setting and all that jazz). Check out the gameplay trailer below…

Victory Games Wants Your Suggestions On The Next Command & Conquer Game

Since unveiling their site on a brand new Command & Conquer game, not much has been revealed about what exactly Victory Games Command & Conquer will even be like other than the fact that it will be a real time strategy game(this is confirmed). They’ve now set up a section on their forums for you, the fans, to sound off suggestion on what you think should be done for the next Command & Conquer game. Have any feedback or suggestions, sound off on their forums. Have any ideas on how to improve the series? 2K officially announced you’ll be able to purchase and play the much awaited Minerva’s Den DLC on May 31st. The DLC will be available on Games For Windows Live for 800 Microsoft Points(that’s USD$9.99) and you’ll be seeing some new achievements added to the game in the next few days. Steve Gaynor, Lead Designer of Minerva’s Den has written the first of a two part series titled ‘History of Minerva’s Den’ which you can read here. Minerva’s Den actually has a new plot and characters. It is a story based DLC so you’ll be getting a nice chunk of gaming with this DLC(lost of good things said about this DLC).

Crysis 2 Retaliation Pack Now Available For USD$9.99

That’s USD$9.99 for 4 new maps. Heck, these maps are not even entirely new(no new assets). The maps are based off of certain sections of the single player campaign. Granted, it is cheaper than the Call of Duty map packs which are sold about USD$15 but for 4 maps and for a game that doesn’t really have that huge of a multiplayer population behind it, is releasing a 10 dollar map pack going to make Crysis 2 a better proposition to new player? Is this what Crysis 2 players want? Sound off in the comment section. Are you okay with a 10 dollar 4 new maps map pack? You can find the map pack in game, once you log into multiplayer. You’ll find download content option in the menu.

CivWorld Gameplay Walkthrough Video - Sid Meier’s Facebook Variant Of The Turn Based Classic

Firaxis has released a gameplay walkthrough video(part one) of the Facebook version of the Civilization franchise, called CivWorld. This gameplay walkthrough takes you through the basics of the game. Sure, it isn’t exactly Civ, but they try to incorporate bits that are from Civilization. It is very much its own game. Requires a lot more cooperation with your friends and you can even have your own nation(with an entourage of your friends to boot). One of the biggest difference between this and the Zynga games, the game ends! Yes you can win cultural, domination science victory like in the PC Civilization games. Oh boy, is this another time sink for me? Which makes me question, do Civ players really want to play Civ with their friends? The game is currently in closed beta and based off of the video, it might go public soon.

Duke Nukem Forever Demo Will Be Available On June 3rd

Randy Pitchford has a special message for all of you. You can play Duke for free, well… a demo is going to be available. Duke Nukem Forever is getting a demo for all platforms on June 3rd but… only for those in the the First Access Club. That is only for those who have purchased Borderlands Game of The Year Edition(or those who have pre ordered Duke from select retailer) and have joined in the First Access Club. I presume that the demo will be out for everyone else about a week later. Duke Nukem Forever will be out at last on June 10th. Watch Randy’s message below…

Gotham City Imposters - New Title From Monolith

Monolith are the original creators of the F.E.A.R series(made the first and the second one) and with Day 1 Studios handling development duties for F.E.A.R 3, many people wondered what was Monolith up to. Well folks, here you have it. Gotham City Imposters. It is said to be a unique downloadable multiplayer first person shooter set in the Batman’s universe. In the press release, they say it is an exaggerated take on first person shooters(is this Bulletsorm like in any way?) and about turning Gotham City upside down(that’ll make it hard for people to aim). I’m sure they don’t literally mean it. It’s a 4v4 multiplayer game where you play as an imposters, a customisable character(no you don’t play as Batman or Joker). You either play in Team Batman or Team Joker. Sounds completely out of whack! Press release below…

Steam Offering Daily Deals - New Deal Every Single Day

It doesn’t say if this daily deal thing will end, which means, they’ll be doing this throughout the year. If you want to get announcements of which game is on offer, you can follow them on twitter or Facebook. I suggest you do follow them if you like good deals(who doesn’t anyway?). Todays deal is Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Release Date Set For November 8th

The Modern Warfare 3 reveal that was supposed to be a glorious event for the biggest game ever is turning out to be a joke. Kotaku made a mockery of whatever marketing plan Activision had by releasing a bucket load of spoilers on the game. Activision reacted by hurryingly releasing all the reveal trailers and saying the Kotaku reveal had a lot of things wrong. Now, the release date for Modern Warfare has been outed by Amazon who have started taking in pre order. It posted the release date as November 8th. If this proves one thing, it’s that you cant keep a huge secret involving many people, a secret for a long time.

Mass Effect 3 New Combat Additions - Piloted Cerberus Mechs Confirmed

If you’ve been following the Mass Effect 3 news, you would have known that Mass Effect 3 will be introducing jump for the first time in the series. That’s not the only thing that’s new with Mass Effect 3’s combat. Speaking to PC Gamer, Bioware’s Casey Hudson detailed how combat has evolved in the highly anticipated RPG. The reapers aren’t your usual Geth or humanoid enemy, but a species which uses technology and robots to help it do its fighting. You’ll also be facing Cerberus Mechs that are piloted by a Cerberus trooper. You will be able to shoot at the trooper piloting the mech and disable the mech and the trooper. If you destroy the mech, the trooper pop outs and will continue to attack you.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare Developer Video Diary #2 - Melee Combat Goriness

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a first person online medieval combat game(you cant say there’s a lot of these type of games). Developed by an indie studio called Torn Banner Studios. Looking at the videos, it reminds me a lot of Mount & Blade except without the RPG and strategy aspects of the single player game. Looks all out multiplayer arena battlefield action. Pretty cool and unique idea. And yes if you’re screaming Age of Chivalry! then good for you… this is indeed from the same team that made that source mod. The footage here is an unfinished alpha version(the game is being developed using the Unreal Development Kit). I’ve added the first developed diary as well as the latest below…
