Games Are Now Legally Considered As Art In The United States

Huraah! GG! Games are now art…well sort of. No High Scores(which is a brilliant blog if I may add) alerted me to this piece on the Escapist reporting that the United States National Endowment for Arts now considers video games as art. Video game developers are eligible for artistic funding. NEA is a US government programme that helps fund artistic projects that are deemed to ‘enhance the public good’. ‘Artists’ can apply for a grant of up to USD$200,000 to create your artistic masterpiece. Don’t expect big studios using this though(and rightfully so). So rest of the world, back to you. We in Malaysia have a loooooooong way to go. Firstly, we have to encourage a love for the arts, not a systematic anesthetising of entire generations towards the arts. Only then can we even try to pass the argument that video games are art here in Malaysia(it wont make sense to most people, they don’t even take video games as a serious medium).
