Pyranha Bytes & JoWooD Weren’t In Good Terms - Corporate Drama
Eurogamer reported that Gothic developers, Piranha Bytes fell out with their publisher, JoWooD. According to co founder Michael Holge, JoWooD ‘forced’ them to release Gothic 3 before it was ready and blamed that this was a major reason why the game didn’t get excellent review scores. He said “The problem was - to cut a long story short - there were a couple of differences in opinion between the publisher and us” and the partnership collapsed with the Gothic 3 ordeal. Because Piranha Bytes had a deal with JoWooD on the Gothic brand name, they had to evaluate what would happen to their franchise.
“We thought, OK, scenario one: they do a good game and it furthers the brand. Scenario 2: they fail and everyone knows why.” said Holge. And failed they did, with Arcania: Gothic 4(which was developed by Spellbound Software). Piranha Bytes went on to make Risen and have Risen 2 on the horizon. They now have the rights to the Gothic title back and JoWooD is facing bankruptcy. Will Piranha Bytes go back to making Gothic games or will they ‘convert’ Risen to Gothic? They didn't want to comment on that prospect.
