Steam Heading To Mobile Platform? Valve Says They Are Looking Into It
CVG reported that Valve admitted it is beginning to look into the possibility of bringing Steam to the mobile platforms(iOS, Android, Win7 phone etc). Valve VP Doug Lombardi said “It is something we're starting to look at now. People are starting to ask us for it. The more requests we receive, the more we feel the need to act on them.” Valve business director, Jason Holtman added “Mobile is really interesting. If you're making games, you have to be thinking about having a platform in this space. But it's too early to say anything definitive.” Valve have been working to get Steam to multiple platforms with the Mac being the first and then the PS3(for Portal 2 release).
They’ve even announced a big picture mode that will allow users to use Steam on a TV or any monitor. Steam on mobile could be tricky though as the platform holders(like Apple) has app stores that give them control over the content that is published on them. I highly doubt Apple or any other mobile platform holder would ever want to give away that exclusivity they hold to another digital distribution platform. But, it could be more like Steam on the PS3, where Valve could instead sell mobile games that have Steam functionality without bringing the store.
