ArmA 3 Gameplay Footage Takes Us For A Dive
We've not been able to see much of ArmA 3 apart from a rather short teaser trailer. Feast your eyes on this! Gamestar.de(it's always the Germans that cover cool PC games) has posted a glorious 7 minute gameplay footage of it. And it's amazing. The footage shows a bunch of sections from the game(keep in mind the game is very early in development and is not due out until 2012) including an under water section. Super cool stuff. Wath the video below...

Respawn Entertainment Website Live - Teases Blurry Image
Respawn Entertainment, that is mainly made up of people from the Infinity Ward(Modern Warfare) exodus has a proper company site up. You can view the site here. There's a blurb on the site that says "Yes, we are working on a game. No, we haven’t revealed it yet. Yes, at some point we will." There's a blurry image that you can find here. It looks like some outdoor area and what looks like a bunch of pillars. Respawn have a publishing deal with EA for their first game and we'll probably hear a lot more about it later this year. Meanwhile for now, speculate away...

Crusader Kings II Developer Video Diary 2 - Character Database
For a character driven grand strategy game, you’d expect the devs to talk sooner or later about characters in Crusader Kings II. In the latest developer video diary, Paradox Interactive’s Chris King talks about characters and how they've improved on the character database to be able to do cool stuff like tracing back the ancestry of your royal family all the way back to the first king. Cool stuff! Crusader Kings II releases early 2012. Watch the developer diary below...

Proun Review: Proudly Priced
Pay What You Want. That's how much recently released indie racer Proun costs. A pretty bold move for solo developer Joost van Dongen (And unexpected as the good response killed his server within hours), who's been toiling on this game for the last six years while not working at Ronimo Games (Awesomenauts and Swords & Soldiers) and sleeping. Is it a gimmick though? Maybe he's letting us name the price because it's not worth anything?
If only it were that simple.

Saints Row: The Third Gameplay Trailer Is Crazy!
Saints Row is a game that doesn't take itself seriously. The third game follows its predecessors zany take on open world games. Volition has released a gameplay trailer for Saints Row: The Third that shows off some of the crazies which includes stuff like driving a pile driver on a civilian, hitting them with a giant purple dildo and driving a tank around. Yeah... this game is crazy. Graphics look really nice too, in a stylistic way. Gameplay trailer below...

Tribes: Ascend Free To Play - Tribes Back From The Grave?
A free to play Tribes that is run by micro transactions? Can it possibly work? I mean why couldn't it considering all the other free to play games that are out there. Developed by Hi Rez Studios,Tribes: Ascend will allow players to purchase different loadouts for their character which includes stuff like different armour combination, speed, different weapons and such. It's coming out fall 2011 and looks really good. We'll have to wait to see if it plays really good as well. Check out the gameplay trailer below...

Dirext X 11 Update For Crysis 2 Gone Live - Trailered And Detailed
It's been a long wait, but Crytek has finally released the Dirtect X 11 update for Crysis 2 PC. You can update the game by running the auto updater(which should launch when you run the game). It's a whopping 2.3 GB! By golly, with my internet connection crapped out at the moment, it'll probably take me a month to download the entire update. Thankfully Crytek has released a short trailer showcasing the features of the new Direct X 11 update. Everyone can gawk at the pretty new spiffy DIrect X 11 graphics. Yay! SHIFT 2 Unleashed DLC’s For The PC Will Be Released For Free
At least the first two that has been released for the consoles. You might remember that I posted a while ago that EA has announced that the GT Legends and Speed Hunters DLC for SHIFT 2 Unleashed has been confirmed to be releasing on the PC. It’s been a while, but I promise you the wait… might have been worth it. Because EA released a press release that both these DLC’s will be release for free for all PC players. Best part, it’s coming out on June 30th!

Battlefield 3 Two Player Coop Will Span Ten Missions - No Portals Here
PC Gamer posted that DICE has spilled the beans regarding a coop mode in Battlefield 3. In the latest issue of PSM3, they revealed that the coop mode will be 10 missions long and will be completely separate from the main single player campaign(taking a leaf off of Portal 2 I suppose). What's a tad bit disappointing is… 2 players only. What’s this? A puzzle game? To be fair, I’m not sure if this is specifically for the console version or it will be the same on the PC(for coop… most likely it will be the same). They didn’t mention if there will be a storyline for the coop bits… but I reckon it will.

The Rise of Digital Gamers - Whatever That Means
VG247 wrote a piece on NPD’s latest reports. According to the NPD, there a new category of gamers on the rise. They are called ‘digital gamers’. Digital gamers play 16 hours a week and own more games. Core gamers still lead the roost with 18 hours per week but fall a little behind in games bought. The NPD report doesn't state specifically who are digital or core gamers but my best guess are gamers that buy from digital distribution. It is without a doubt digital distribution pushes more games for the cheap(and yes it is cheaper if you take into account those discounts). However, core gamers still make up the highest percentage with 23 percent with digital gamers in last place. PC gamers make up 15 % which confuses me further. Just what the heck is a digital gamer. Aren’t PC gamers already digital gamers? Either way, digital distribution will continue to grow. Now if only our internet connections get better…

This Week’s Gaming - More Alice & Hearts of Iron III
Nothing much new for me. There’s that Hearts of Iron 3 expansion due out this week. For The Motherland, which I might not get much time with this week. Trying to complete Alice so that I can start with my review.
Intel Reveals Release Of Next Chipset - Damn You Intel!
If you thought your fancy Sandy bridge would last for an eternity, well, you're about to become outdated. Thanks to Intel's 'Ivy Bridge' architecture which they have said will be released early 2012. Ivy bridge is said to be a slight improvement using 22nm architecture(as opposed to the current 32nm) Their next big chipset will be Intel 'Haswell'(2013) and that one promises to be a radical architecture improvement and they claim it will have an integrated graphics processor that can compete with the offerings from AMD or Nvidia. Fat hopes.
This really makes things difficult for people like me. I'm an upgrader, I like to upgrade my PC and keep them running for a longer time(before they become completely obsolete with PC games of the day). I'm not someone who is anti progress(progress is good) but Intel's aggressive chipset changes just makes it so hard to upgrade your CPU. I just spent my Saturday walking around Low Yat Plaza trying to find any shop that sells an i5 for the 1156 socket motherboard(managed to find only one shop selling an i7 which I bought). And now their going to be done with sandy bridge? If you are using a 1155 motherboard and have been thinking about changing your CPU, I suggest you do it before they phase out these 1155 processors.

Star Wars The Old Republic Alderaan Battle Video - Group Combat
Time for another Star Wars The Old Republic Developer Commentary video. It’s off of an E3 showcase from a mission on Alderaan. Look very much like an MMO. Stronghold 3 Debut Gameplay Trailer - Mysterious Narrator Talks About A Boy
Firefly Studios hardcore city builder/RTS Stronghold, is returning with Stronghold 3(it has been a while and this will be the first to go fully 3D). Stronghold 3 is an RTS game where your objective is to defend your town/fortress from an impending siege of your fortress(that you have built before it gets seiged). These games used to be very challenging and it is likely that this game just might follow its predecessors footsteps. Stronghold releases late summer 2011. Debut trailer below…

Team Fortress 2 Now Free To Play - The Medic's A Spy!
Breaking news. Robin Walker in an interview with Develop Magazine stated that Team Fortress 2 is now free to play(yes... forever). He said "Over the years we've done a bunch of price experimentations with the game, going all the way down to $2.49 in our random one-hour Halloween sales. The more we've experimented, the more we've learned there are fundamentally different kinds of customers, each with their own way of valuing the product. Now that we're shipping it, it feels like a fairly straightforward next step along the "Games as Services" path we've been walking down for a while now." The full game will be made available for free. No gimped version for free players. For now, the only monetisation method is whatever they sell in the in game store(mostly vanity items). If you've been living under a rock, it's about time you try out one of the most popular online team based shooter. Also meet the medic video below...

LA Noire Heading To The PC This Fall
It’s confirmed! Rockstar announced that Team Bondi’s LA Noire will be coming to the PC this fall. The PC version will have 3D support, and shocks…. keyboard mapping(as well as gamepad compatibility) and enhanced graphical options. LA Noire is an adventure type game where you solve crimes and explore an open world. The emphasis is clearly on the solving crimes(there are gun fights although I suppose not as satisfying). The game is known for using a facial mapping technology that enables developers to make map lifelike facial expressions on video game characters. I’m pleased this is coming to the PC and will give it a shot. Although, I’m very aware of Rockstar’s track record when it comes to ‘porting’ games to the PC(buggy as hell). The development of the PC version will be handled by Rockstar Leeds(not Team Bondi).
Time Warp! A Bunch Of People Talk About Quake And QuakeWorld(1996)
OMG! John Carmack announces Quake 2. Today is the 15th anniversary of Quake. A game in my opinion, was the most influential 3D game that set the bar for 3D real time rendering that we take for granted these days(ooohhh look… no DX11 support). Bethesda has posted this rather old video from way back in 1996 on the launch of QuakeWorld(which is a regular staple or tradition for Id Software now). John Carmack talks about Quake, the tech and future plans of Id. It’s a blast from the past. Happy birthday Quake. Video below…
ArmA II Is Free… Well Part Of It
Rock Paper Shotgun got the jump on a Bohemia Interactive announcement that realistic, super simulation, realistic warfare, soldier sim… ArmA II is available for free now. The thing is, it is without the fancy advanced graphics setting and the single player portion of the game. You’ll still get the multiplayer bits and the editor(which is a very powerful tool for recreating realistic battlefields). You can get ArmA II free here. Download speed might be slow due to network congestions and other Malaysian ISP issues. ArmA II free launch trailer below…
Portal 2 Is A Great Success - So Sayeth Gabe Newell
Valve boss Gabe Newell at the Games For Change conference stated that Portal 2 has sold more than 3 million copies in total so far. Joystiq reported that he didn’t give a breakdown of the sales on different platforms. To give you an idea, Portal sold 4 million copies in total(this is however on the consoles) to this date. Since Valve literally gave the game away for free on Steam(for a single day), I suspect the number on PC for the first game would be quite high. But 3 million since launch(April 21st, less than 3 months) for Portal 2 is certainly quite a feat. You can read my review of Portal 2 here. I thought it was a remarkable game which everyone should play. Unless of course you hate good music, humour, witty characters, smart level design, and brilliant story telling… then maybe you might not like Portal 2.

Take Two Says There’ll Be More Duke Nukem - Hopefully With A Much Shorter Development Cycle
The bad reviews for Duke Nukem Forever hasn’t unfazed Take Two. In an interview with Forbes, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick admits that there’ll be more Duke IP from them. He said “ We don’t really talk about it in detail but you will see future Duke IP coming from this company. Part of it is the economic opportunities that interact with entertainment are so huge. Part of it is that we are very creative folks in control. Part of it is we don’t want to ever be in the position of dumping something down just to make another buck. If we can take some of our intellectual property and bring it to another medium in an extraordinary high quality way, that delights consumers and represents an interesting commercial opportunity for us, we will”.
Of course he could well be talking about cross platform titles such as for the mobile and maybe even the casual market. My guess is that Take Two paid a big sum of money for the IP and they would like to recoup revenue from it regardless of how Duke is perceived. Good luck Take Two. Hint… don’t take 12 years to make your next Duke game(like cough..cough 3D Realms).

End Of Nations Combined Arms Trailer Features Armoured Mechs
MMORTS is the unproven genre. No game has quite got the formula correct and Petroglyph are giving it their best shot with End of Nations. It has a bunch of features that is comparable to any MMORPG(crafting, guilds, PVE, PVP to name a few). I’m not on the MMORTS bandwagon and my experience with the few available have left me cold. My main issue with them is the grind and build up to have a proper army. End of Nations is due out some time this year(no solid date yet). Watch the latest trailer below…

Mount & Blade With Fire And Sword Major Update Released - No More Poor And Irish
Just when I thought of jumping in the game and while the review is in the works, Taleworlds releases a huge update for With Fire And Sword. The update improves upon a multitude of things including making the economy a lot healthier. Which was an issue I had of the game. Tropico 4 Return To Paradise Trailer - El Presidente Is Back
Haemimont Games Tropico 3 was a sleeper hit in my opinion. It didn't quite revolutionise the Tropico franchise(which has stayed dormant since PopTop Software closed down) but it embraced its spirit and 'funness' of building your very own banana republic. With Tropico 4, they don't seem to be veering too much from the previous formula. The new trailer showcases the natural disasters that will have a much bigger impact on your island and... new buildings. Tropico 4 releases on August 2011. Trailer below...

King Arthur: Fallen Champions Announced - Britannia Falls Into Chaos… Yet Again
Neocore Games announced that they’ll be releasing King Arthur: Fallen Champions! It’s apparently a standalone game that acts as a bridge between King Arthur 1 and King Arthur 2(which is planned for 2012). Best part… they are planning on pricing it at USD$9.99. The Case Of Duke Nukem Forever And Bad PR - Bad Reviews = Hostile PR Firm
Ars Technica wrote a feature on what’s been happening about the bad Duke Nukem Forever reviews. It’s finally out and it looks like it’s very mediocre(and the reviews reflect this). Unfortunately the PR hired by 2K went around threatening these sites that gave the game bad reviews. The Redner Group, the firm hired to do PR for DNF openly stated on twitter that “Too many went too far with their reviews...we are reviewing who gets games next time and who doesn't based on today's venom”. I’ve read some of the reviews. I think they were quite acceptable.
The relationship between media and PR firm might be a little complicated. We need review copies, they need the coverage. But you can’t expect the media to give your product glowing reviews, you win some… you lose some. 2K has since clarified that they are terminating their contract with The Redner Group for Duke Nukem Forever and do not condone such behaviour from PR. Good… I know people over react sometimes, but come on… they are PR, as a PR firm, they should know how important what they say in public will reflect on their firm and even the product. Duke Nukem Forever has a Metacritic score of 57 on the PC, which is understandable as some of the technical hiccups are less severe on the PC(the console version have lower scores).

Codemasters announced today that the online component for GRID will be taken down(the server infrastructure) for the PC and PS3 versions. Crysis 2 Decimation Map Pack Trailer - New Map Pack But Game Is No Longer On Steam Now
I find it rather odd that a publisher has removed a game, originally available on Steam off of Steam. A lot of people suspect that EA are moving into making their huge hit titles as Origin exclusive. Origin being the EA downloader rebranded as their own digital download service. PC Gamer wrote that EA clarified that the removal of Crysis 2 on Steam was not their decision and was Cryktek’s one. They said Steam has imposed certain business terms that forced Crysis 2 to be removed from Steam. I’m not sure what to think of it. I do not know what these new business terms are but for now, Battlefield 3 and even the recently(just today) released Alice: Madness Returns is not on Steam. Anyway, sound off in the comments what you think about this. Oh yeah, new map pack for Crysis 2 released called Decimation(USD$10). It adds 5 new maps. Check out the trailer below…

Free To Play Titles Officially Arrive On Steam
There's always been free to play games on Steam. Global Agenda was available for quite a while. Today, Valve unveiled a whole new section on Steam for Free To Play games. Since making Team Fortress 2 their micro transaction experiment, Valve has had the back bone for the free to play model to thrive on Steam. They currently have three games on offer; Champions Online, Spiral Knights, and Global Agenda Free Agent. Ijji.com has also announced they'll be bringing then Unreal Engine 3 powered FPS, A.V.A. Good thing that... their own platform is a bloody mess. You can read my experience of playing Genesis AD here. Steam has again beaten the rest of the digital platforms to the punch. Oil Rush Trailer - Quirky Strategy Game That's Taking Naval Warfare To New Depths...Maybe? Maybe Not
Don’t expect a naval sim with this game. Oil Rush is an RTS game with a mix of tower defense set in the far future where oil is scarce and… shocks… nations are fighting for this resource. From the website “Oil Rush is a real-time strategy game based on group control. Battlefield 3 Boycott? And They Are Serious…
Rock Paper Shotgun reported that a group of gamers are planning to boycott DICE’s Battlefield 3. There’s a reddit campaign underway to boycott the game. Their bone of contention seems to be with the DLC that comes with those that pre order the game and the fact that it will not be available for others. The issue apparently isn’t with the battle For Karkand expansion pack(those that pre order will get some classic BF2 maps and a few other extra new ones), but with some DLC weapons that is exclusive to them.
While gamers will be able to purchase the Battle For Karkand expansion separately, the exclusive weapons and items(Type 88 Light Machine Gun, DAO-12 Shotgun, Flechette Shotgun Ammo, and a Flash Suppressor) wont be available to anyone(with no way to purchase it). RPS has contacted EA to comment on this. I say… it’s way to early to jump to conclusions that they will not release this weapon pack. But I definitely see how those that pre order will have an advantage.. at least for sometime until EA decides to release the DLC pack. Will update once more news on this surfaces.
