The Case Of Duke Nukem Forever And Bad PR - Bad Reviews = Hostile PR Firm
Ars Technica wrote a feature on what’s been happening about the bad Duke Nukem Forever reviews. It’s finally out and it looks like it’s very mediocre(and the reviews reflect this). Unfortunately the PR hired by 2K went around threatening these sites that gave the game bad reviews. The Redner Group, the firm hired to do PR for DNF openly stated on twitter that “Too many went too far with their reviews...we are reviewing who gets games next time and who doesn't based on today's venom”. I’ve read some of the reviews. I think they were quite acceptable.
The relationship between media and PR firm might be a little complicated. We need review copies, they need the coverage. But you can’t expect the media to give your product glowing reviews, you win some… you lose some. 2K has since clarified that they are terminating their contract with The Redner Group for Duke Nukem Forever and do not condone such behaviour from PR. Good… I know people over react sometimes, but come on… they are PR, as a PR firm, they should know how important what they say in public will reflect on their firm and even the product. Duke Nukem Forever has a Metacritic score of 57 on the PC, which is understandable as some of the technical hiccups are less severe on the PC(the console version have lower scores).
