Relic took some very big risks changing things around for the Dawn of War sequel. Reactions to the multiplayer beta has been mixed but there definitely are segments that enjoy the game a lot too. Recently the gaming press were given the opportunity to test drive the Co-Op campaign. Again the reactions are a bit of a mixed bag.
Kotaku's AJ Glasser didn't mince his words when his write up started with the title An identity Crisis? He was generally not too impressed by the RPG aspect of it. He said:
All in all, I'm not unhappy with what Relic has done with the campaign mode, especially since co-op is so painless. But I wonder if the more "hardcore" RTS gamers are going to feel robbed of strategy by forgoing the base building and the hold-this-point-for-this-much-time gameplay. I guess they can still get their kicks in the multiplayer modes – and maybe the later levels in campaign mode introduce trickier situations to strategize around.
IGN's Jason Ocampo highlighted the fact that even the developers were aware of the drastic changes.
According to Ebert, some users were in "a state of shock," as they expected a pure sequel to Dawn of War or a Warhammer-themed version of Company of Heroes. Others were excited by the newness of the sequel, while others were uncertain of what to think. There was a final group that absolutely loved the changes. The big question that remains unanswered though is how big is each of these constituencies? It's something that can't be determined until the sales figures come in for the game.
These are huge questions to Ebert. "We took chances," he said. "There's always a chance it doesn't pay off."
Jason Ocampo was unsure just how much these segments represented. The previews generally give off the impression that the single player/CO-Op is more of an action RPG rather than a typical RTS.
