Empire: Total War Demo Impression
SEGA has released the demo to the much awaited, Empire: Total War on Steam. The games developer, The Creative Assembly has included a naval, and land battle scenario as well as a tutorial land and naval battle. The demo is available on Steam and having downloaded the demo(and having anticipated it with much excitement), here's my impression of it:
Firstly the description for the two battles included:
Battle of Brandywine Creek
After landing from his transport ships on the American coast, Major-General Sir William Howe led the British troops eastwards, with the intention of capturing Philadelphia. In preparation, American General George Washington readied most of his units to defend from this frontal assault around the narrow crossing of Chad's Ford on the Brandywine. The Creek flows through the countryside of Pennsylvania, enveloped by sheer cliffs and heavily wooded hills on both sides. Safe in the knowledge the fast flowing creek could not easily be crossed; Washington was confident of holding his position. However, more detailed surveillance of the terrain would suggest that alternative routes could turn the battle in the favour of the British.
Battle of Lagos
As so often in 18th Century warfare, French plans to invade England during the Seven Years War were reliant on ships from the naval base at Toulouse joining ships from Brest. The British had both ports blockaded, and the French had to wait for one of the blockading fleets to withdraw for re-supply before attempting any rendezvous. The opportunity came when the British fleet under Admiral Boscawen at Toulon withdrew to Gibraltar. The French under Jean-François de la Clue-Sabran left Toulon, and began to make their way towards Brest. Passing the Straits of Gibraltar, the French were spotted by Boscawen's lookout ships. Giving chase, Boscawen's fleet was only slightly larger than the French force, and caught up with them off the coast of Portugal where battle was joined. Take control of the British and defeat the French to end the invasion threat to Britain.
The demo has issues, technical issues that is. It takes forever to load. From the get go, you will have to wait, for the menu, and for the battles to load for a long time. I can't stress this enough, it is very long and has to be optimised in the final retail release. There are sound issues as well with sound effects disappearing when zoomed in and some crackling noise(not very obvious).
Overall, the new engine actually works surprisingly well. If you have a relatively recent graphics card, you would be able to play it(granted it is a decent graphic card) with high details. It looks stunning. Even with medium settings which the demo limits me too(which I think is because of my graphic card only having 256MB of RAM), the game looks stunning.
From the battlefield environment to the details on the units. The water looks amazingly real. The only beef I have is with the medium textures look a bit muddy(not as high res) but it is something I can forgive.
Having the graphics looks amazingly sharp is a great bonus, since Empire: Total War looks to be a great game as well. The amount of strategic depth in the battles is a lot more than the previous games. The battles are a lot slower and the battle maps are a lot bigger.
This leads to a more protracted battle that may happen over different areas of the map. Battles may be fought in one central location or on many different fronts with smaller armies. Instead of simply marching your army to face the enemy, you constantly have to re evaluate the situation and adapt to them, very much like a real war.
Battles with muskets and other gun powder units will require more emphasis on positioning your troops to maximise your arc of fire and minimise the enemies ability to engage you. Use cavalry for their mobility and not as the tanks they were in the medieval era. Battles are a lot more different from the medieval period yet they feel very much like a Total War game.
The naval battles are a new feature in Empire: Total War and is one of the most visually impressive parts of the game. Soldiers milling about on the deck, crew moving around the sails, to even underneath the deck, the cannon crew awaiting the battle ahead. Ships have all sorts of intricate details from their crew to the design of the stern with ornate carvings.
The naval battles are a lot more difficult to control since you need to micro manage your ships movements, and firing. While you can use a fire at will option that will reduce the micromanagement, to truly do well in these battles, you need to take control of your ships cannons for a powerful broadside shot.
There are also different type of cannon shots. Round shots are the regular cannon shots that break hulls, chain shots are to be used to break the mast and rip off sails effectively slowing down ships, and grapeshots clear decks of enemy sailors and soldiers allowing you to board the ships and take over it. The naval battles are a bit more demanding techinically than the land batles and will be slower than the land battles. This is especially true when there are many ships and all the ships are firing their cannons.
The AI was something many Total War fans wanted improved. The previous games had very underwhelming AI that was only a challenge when you were outnumbered. I'm pleased to report that the AI in Empire: Total War is a step in the right direction. The AI is now state based and will shift its strategy depending on the situation.
In the demo, the AI will move its forces when you cross the left river crossing. It will defend its half of the battlefield without actually blindly charging at you. That in itself is great news and will do a lot to add to a more engaging grand campaign.
The demo while featuring two battles, is only a rather small slice of what the full game will have. The grand campaign being a big chunk of a Total War game, promises to be a lot more longer and challenging this time round with an improved diplomacy AI.
Empire: Total War ships 4th March. Pre order information over here. Stay tuned for a review when the game is out.
Note : The loading issues and technical bugs have and are continuously being ironed out by Creative Assembly and reports say that the final version will be better optimised. There will also be a day zero patch that will have further optimisation.

Quake Live Beta Now Open To The Public!
Id Software's browser based Quake Live! is now available for everyone in the open beta. Be warned that the site has been hammered by traffic and that there is an actual queue to register in the beta. Quake Live! features the same fast and frenetic gameplay of Quake 3 while hosting many servers, match making and persistent stat tracking.
I have been playing the closed beta and can say it's great. The only issue is with the servers being not very good for those in Asia. Hopefully the open beta will have added a couple of new servers nearer to our region. A game that requires precise aiming like this will need a low ping server.

Grand Theft Auto IV DLC Okay For Singapore
Gamepolitics reported that the Singapore government has given the thumbs up for the upcoming Lost And The Damned DLC(XBOX360 exclusive). The new DLC grabbed the headlines for its full frontal nudity in one of its cutscenes. According to Singapore's Media Development Authority:
Mr Ernest Khoo, head of video games and media content at MDA, said that whether full-frontal male nudity is allowed depends on the context in which it occurs.
In this expansion pack, he said, the depiction is 'non-sexual and can hence fall within the M18 rating', which is also the rating given to the original GTA IV. He added that with the M18 rating, only those 18 years old and above will be buying the game and its expansion pack.
Going by the video game classification system MDA introduced last year, games for online download do not need to be sent for classification before sale here.
Singapore was on the gaming news when it banned Mass Effect briefly in 2007. This decision sees them loosening their restrictions a little bit.

Empire: Total War Demo Releasing Really Soon And New Video!
Mark O'Connell of Creative Assembly posted on the forums that the demo to the highly anticipated Empire: Total War, will be live on Steam 20th February at 4pm GMT. The demo will feature the tutorials for the land and naval battles, as well as two historical battles(one land and naval). There is also a new Superior Tactics 2 video that features game designer Jack Lusted facing a powerful cavalry army. Video and demo details below:
Hi guys,
I am pleased to report that our official Empire: Total War demo will be available via Steam from 4pm GMT on Friday 20th February.
Giving you a taste of the epic engagements that you'll be experiencing from 3rd March, the demo will take you through the basics of land and naval command and then unleash you in two historical battles!
You will get to play as the mighty British Empire as they do battle against the Americans in the 'Battle of Brandywine Creek' and then take on the French Navy in the 'Battle of Lagos'...

We hope that you enjoy playing our demo, which will give you a small taste of Empire: Total War action in preparation to leading your own empire to victory in March!
Thanks,
Mark O'Connell

Sounds awesome! This translates to 12pm midnight(tonight) for Malaysians. Empire: Total War will be released on the 3rd of March.

Team Fortress 2 Scout Update, Bonk Energy Drink And Achievements
More Team Fortress 2 news from Valve. A new energy drink for the scout. Should replace his pistol. A list of scout achievements has also been announced. All in all, a total of 35 new scout achievements.
Bonk Energy Drink
Runnin’ rings around all them molasses-slow dummies out there on the battle- field is thirsty frickin’ work. But when it comes to quenchin’ that thirst, only one thermonuclear thirst detonator packs all the “Atomic Punch” you’ll ever need. Bonk! is fulla radiation, which as we all know is pretty great for givin’ people superpowers. Just one can’ll blast ya into a few-second rush of radioactive energy so powerful you’ll be dodgin’ bullets like they ain’t even there!
LOL wut!? The idea of a scout spam frightens me.
Grand Ages: Rome Demo Impression
Grand Ages: Rome is the spiritual successor to the Imperium Romanum series(2 being the last one). For the uninitiated, the Imperium Romanum series has always had a small loyal following while not really catching on with the general strategy audience.
Grand Ages: Rome is a strategy game that mixes elements of city building games like Caeser IV(the famous Impression games) and merges that together with combat elements of Age of Empires. What it esentially ends up is a sort of odd hybrid that may not cater to both city building or RTS gamers. With the demo released, I had a quick run through the demo.
Like all city building games, you will be tasked at building a flourishing colony in some far off place. Grand Ages: Rome follows that cliche and requires you to set up a colony. You need to build housing, provide them with food, and supporting structures to maintain them, entertain them and even military buildings to recruits units to wage a war(more on this later).
Schools are an interesting aspect as unlike other city building games, you use schools to research new buildings and technology(that can give you bonuses). All these leads to a very fine balancing act as you will need to build brickworks and lumberyards as housing constantly consumes them. But to have these buyidling you need your workforce from housing.
Later on as your city gets bigger you'll find you need to build higher level housing to get equites(they serve the backbone of your army as well as a host of other useful functions). My buildings constantly caught fire no matter how close a fountain was built. I was forced to build a forum(a requirement to build a school), a school to research prefecture building, an equite housing, and only then a prefecture building and even then I had the equite leaving because he didn't have some other resource. Oh goody! A real Nero in the making.
The building uses a zone of influence method of supply or receiving well...supplies. Instead of waiting for your citizens to move or wait for a walker, the buildings automaticaly just receive them. This of course leads to a much more easier system but your cities can be a bit of a mess as you try to just plonk down a building without worrying about the actual layout.
Speaking of citizenry, your plebs are of course present but only as a graphical oversight. You cant interact with them or find out about anyone's mood. They just go about doing their daily business. You can zoom out to the main map which shows a wider area of the entire map. You can plan your expansion based on the mineral deposit in this map.
The combat is unfullfiling. It's no Rome Total War, so don't expect to have any impact by flanking your enemies or using cavalry to crash into missile units. The combat is strictly based on numerical value rather than actual tactics.
Units can gain experience and you can train them to increase their experience. This improves their attack or movement speed but it isn't exactly clear what are these improvements though. All in all, the game is a mixed bag that never really does the combat or the city building as well as games that do them exclusively.

Unreal Tournament III, Titan Pack Release Imminent
Bigdownload featured the upcoming Titan Pack update for Unreal Tournament III. The update will be released for the PC and PS3 as a 800MB patch(available on Steam) on March 5th and will feature new maps, gamepaly modes and other goodies. It is reported that:
The Titan Pack bonus content introduces 11 new multiplayer maps for Deathmatch, CTF, Vehicle CTF and Warfare modes, plus eight popular maps from the first UT3 bonus pack and Xbox 360 version (you can check out details on all the new maps in our feature article - ed). In addition, players will experience two new game modes: Greed mode, a "tug of war" style kill points battle, and Betrayal mode, a cutthroat style of play where alliances and teams can shift fluidly throughout a match. The Titan Pack also rewards gamers for performing tasks like collecting all the power-ups in a level. There are 57 awards that can be attained as Steam Achievements for PC and Trophies for PS3.
Description of new map:
Hostile (Warfare)
Many research vessels were lost in the early days of Na Pali exploration. When the terrain or local fauna proved to be too dangerous for recovery, equipment was often abandoned and forgotten. But when it was learned that the Necris had moved in to recover this equipment for their own purposes, the NEG dispatched military salvage units to reclaim their property.
Confrontation (Warfare)
Confrontation Canyon serves as a training ground for Axon forces, improving unit readiness by providing highly realistic, stressful training across the full spectrum of infantry and mechanized conflict. It is the premiere facility for heavy armor training, and all forces must complete courses here before assignment to a Leviathan unit.
Great news for Unreal Tournament II players. Hopefully this will enliven the community a bit. Epic is also having a modding competition called Make Something Unreal with huge cash prizes.
Team Fortress 2 Scout Update, New Community Made Maps
Valve revealed in their blog that the upcoming scout update for Team Fortress 2 will feature two new community made maps. The update will feature Arena_Watchtower, an arena based map and CP_Junction, a control point map.
Arena _Watchtower created by Joshua ‘JoshuaC’ Shiflet
An Arena map that plays unlike any of Valve’s Arena maps, with a heavy focus on vertical space and long, open sight lines. Control of the central building is a key decision that teams must wrestle over. More Sniper friendly than most Arena maps, it’s a perfect complement to the Scout update. Batter up!
CP_Junction created by Sean ‘Heyo’ Cutino
A Gravel-Pit style map that the community has been heckling us to include for months. Junction is a sharp contrast to Watchtower. It’s full of tight spaces and short sight lines, which create combat opportunities dominated by ambushes and explosive weaponry.
