MicroVolts Open Beta Introducing Zombies - It’s That Korean Game That Curiously Looks Like TF2
Way back, you might remember a Korean game which put out a trailer that suspiciously looked, and sounded a lot like the Team Fortress 2 trailer. The game in question was H.A.V.E Online, a free to play MMO shooter where action figures have come to life and started fighting each other. An English version has since been released with the title MicroVolts. It is currently in open beta. It’s not an FPS(it’s third person shooting). According to VE3D, they’ll be introducing a new zombie mode on May 5th. Check out the suspiciously similar trailer below and press release…

Portal 2 DLC #1 Announced! - Free On All Platforms
In what is an unprecedented move, Valve has announced that the upcoming DLC for Portal 2 will be free on all platforms. Owners of Portal 2 on the PC, PS3, XBOX360 and the Mac(which technically everyone on the PC owns since everyone who buys the PC version will be able to play the Mac version) will be able to get it this summer for free. The DLC will add new test chambers, a leaderboard and new challenge modes for single player and coop. Great! I’m also assuming there is going to be new hats as well. In case you missed it you can read my review of Portal 2 here. Read the rather short press release below…

Disciples III Resurrection Announced - The Undead Has Risen
Akella announced Disciples III Resurrection, a direct sequel to Disciples III Renaissance, a turn based strategy game with a gothic art style and an interesting unit upgrade mechanic(it was simple but vital to the combat in the game). It sounds like Resurrection will be a standalone game since they are calling it a sequel. Resurrection will introduce a new faction into the game, the undead. No release date announced. UPDATE: Need For Speed The Run Revealed Accidentally? - Using Frostbite 2 Engine
UPDATE 2: EA has an official site up for the game. Bigdownload reports that NFS: The Run will be using the Frostbite 2 engine that will power Battlefield 3. EA Blackbox will be developing the game. I wonder if this will be a graphical power house. hmmm
UPDATE: An EA representative has confirmed with IGN that this is real.
Bigdownload posted that shopto.net, a UK online retailer had accidentally posted up info on a new Need For Speed title call Need For Speed The Run and started to take pre orders for it(it has since been taken down, guess EA didn’t like it one bit). The site posted up the premise for the game, apparently you are on the run from the cops and you must go on this cross country drive from Los Angeles to New York all the time evading the cops. They even posted a debut trailer that someone has manage to post up on YouTube. Need For Speed The Run is supposed to be out on November 11th 2011. Leaked debut trailer below…

Star Wars The Old Republic Gamespot Video Interview - You Get Your Own Starship!
Gamespot has posted up this rather enlightening video interview with Star Wars The Old Republic Lead Writer, Daniel Erickson. Lots of cool stuff here. It seems to have everything I’d ever want in a Star Wars game. You get your own starship that acts as your base of operations? Super cool! Voiced dialogue for the entire game? That’s pretty hard to imagine. I wonder how big the actual game will be upon release. Star Wars The Old Republic releases late 2011(I suppose Holiday 2011). Video interview below…
EA Download Manager Gets Steam Like Update
This might have been stealthily released without getting the attention of most people, but I noticed an update for EADM today. And my oh my, it looks like a major update that adds features that puts it closer to Steam(at least the way Steam works). You can now link up your Facebook, XBOXlive gamertag, or PSN account. Curiously no option to link up a Steam account. This will pull your friends list of people that also have an EADM account. The biggest addition is the new in game overlay. Hitting Shift + F1 will open an in game overlay with a friend list(you can chat with friends) and a web browser. There is even an in game frame counter(not sure how to disable this yet). The only down side is that there doesn’t seem to be an offline mode yet. You need to be online and log in to your account to play your games. All recent EA games can be added to your EADM account(you need to redeem your retail CD key in the settings). List of changes below…

Age of Empires Online Video Blog #3 - Info On Defense of Crete Mode
Age of Empires Online is currently in closed beta(it’s a free to play RTS that combines some stuff from social games as well as more persistent MMO stuff). Thankfully I’ve been able to grab a beta key for myself and will be jumping in on this. Gas Powered Games has put out part 3 of their AoE developer diary. In this video, they go through this new game mode call Defense of Crete. It’s a tower defense mode. There’s coop too and it looks like total mayhem. Just like what happened to the facility when you … murdered me. Video blog below…

Driver San Francisco Story Trailer - The Return of Tanner, well… sort of
The iconic PlayStation arcade driving game is back(and yes it used to be good. I played the first Driver on PlayStation 1). The series has had a rocky time with its poorly received sequels. With Driver San Francisco, Ubisoft are putting you back in the shoes of Tanner, but the catch is that he’s had an accident. A very serious accident and he is in a coma. The game introduces a new shift mechanic that allows you to shift into another car without ever stopping or getting out of the car. Tanner thinks he is out of the coma, but you are actually playing the game as a dream. Not sure where the narrative goes with that, but they are touting this shift feature as a major addition that will keep you in the action. Maybe it is all a simulation done by an AI. An AI that likes potatoes? Will it bring back the former glory of the first entry back? You’ll have to wait till August 30th when it releases for the PC, PS3 and XBOX360. Story trailer below…
Brink Get SMART Series Trailer Part 3 - General Gameplay
Part 3 of the SMARTening trailers is out. In this trailer, they explain the general gameplay in Brink. In addition, Bethesda has posted on their blog a FAQ on dedicated servers for Brink. You’ll be able to download the dedicated server files from Steam(it is a Steamworks game after all) and host your own server. So no, you aren’t stuck to any one server provider. So you think you’re SMART? You will be tested soon. And then I shall if you really are SMART. Testing will begin soon. Watch the trailer below to get SMART…

Diablo III Development In Final Phase - Testing Should Resume After Crunch
Diablo III designer, Jay Wilson, said to the NYTimes that development for Diablo III is entering crunch mode. “We’re definitely in the home stretch. We’re crunching. This is when the magic happens” he said. Based on leaked documents(purportedly leaked), it was clear that the game publishing giant is aiming to get Diablo III out the door by this year. Blizzard’s Rob Pardo has also expressed intentiond of releasing Diablo III this year. Hmmm… I don’t know, could be close. Might make it this year or early next year. But… after crunch… is surely testing phase… testing… must continue testing…

Portal 2 Review - It’s Good To Be Back, Now… Continue Testing
It’s tough to follow through on a game that was such a seminal critical hit like Portal. Portal was a break away success. It was never meant to be a huge game on its own, and was an experiment for Valve(part of the Orange Box package). It ended up being one of gaming’s classics for combining puzzle elements with a first person perspective and having an interesting theme and back story to boot(and generated a bunch of internet memes). With Portal 2, Valve wanted to ‘make a sequel that was more of the new rather than the same’(Gabe Newell said this).
Total War: Shogun 2 Multiplayer Tutorial Video Part 2 - Ever Wondered How The Clan Ladder Works?
Kieron Brigden of Creative Assembly is back with the sequel to the extremely successful Total War: Shogun 2 Multiplayer Tutorial video. Yes a sequel to a video. This time, he goes into more detail about the avatar conquest mode. Retainers, veteran units etc. He also explains about the clan conquest mode a little, which is quite confusing for new players. I think it’s just the rainbow colours blinding people. I’ve included both part 1 and part 2 for your viewing pleasure below(part 2 is below part 1)…
UPDATE: Portal 2 DLC Confirmed - Release This Summer
UPDATE: Bigdownload reported that Valve VP, Doug Lombardi told fastcompany.com that "We will be announcing some DLC for it, so folks can keep a look out for more content coming this summer. We'll be putting more details out about that in a week or so. We'll support that with more videos or more comics.". So there you have it folks, it won't take long before you get the first bit of extra content for Portal 2. That is, if Valve time doesn't come into the picture.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Valve writer, Chet Faliszek confirmed that Portal 2 already has a DLC in the works. He didn’t really say much about it other than “We have a DLC that we're going to be announcing. Really can't give you any detail [until] after launch, and we're going to have some details about how that'll get released and what that'll form forthcoming.” If it follows Valve’s past DLC release trend, it should be free for the PC. Excellent! Chet also said in that interview that Portal 2’s single player will be 3 times longer compared to Portal and the coop campaign will be 2 times longer. Oooo you know what, It’ll be super cool if they released a DLC that was a new coop campaign. Portal 2 WILL be out on April 19th.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel Gameplay Trailer - Captive Honour Ain’t No Honour
Techland’s Call of Juarez modern take, ‘The Cartel’ is putting things in a new setting. The new wild west, Mexico. The game now has you taking down well… the Cartel. Call of Juarez: The Cartel will introduce 3 player coop single player campaign(which is of course playable solo as well). It is due out summer 2011. Keep a lookout for a Megadeth reference. Trailer below…

F.E.A.R 3 Delayed Again - Releasing June 24th
F.E.A.R 3 which was already delayed once to May 24th, has now been delayed to June 24th. Videogamer reported that GameGears(A UK Retailer) has changed the release date to June 24th and they have got confirmation from Warner Bros. Interactive of the delay. It is highly likely that June 24th is the release date for Europe and North America should usually be a day or two earlier. I’ll update this post when I’ve got confirmation of the new North American release date.

New series of videos showcasing the multiplayer modes, your abilities and classes. Brink releases on May 10th(it’s a Steamworks game) and it’s looking really sharp. Looks like a mix between Team Fortress 2 with Mirror’s Edge. A very multiplayer focused game, so don’t expect a great single player experience… well at least from what I have seen. There’ll be coop missions (that will be playable with bots in single player) plus some other cool multiplayer modes. One looks like the Payload maps from Team Fortress 2 with a robotic cart. Some Dude Says Gabe Newell & Valve Are Done With Single Player Isolated Experiences
That some dude is none other than Geoff Keighley from Gametrailers.com. A well respected industry veteran(in the video games journalism business that is). He did a short documentary that is on sale on the Apple store(for just USD$1.99) called The Final Hours of Portal 2. He said he was told by Gabe Newell and Valve’s project manager, Erik Johnson that they are done with ‘isolated single player experiences’. Geoff further states that both of them think that Portal 2 will be the last of such single player isolated experience. You can read the whole report on Geoff Keighley’s insider ‘expose’ over at Kotaku.
The comment is said to be ‘curious’ and Stephen Totilo over at Kotaku says that even they(Valve) aren’t sure what all this means and that they are ‘still figuring it out’. I think this is mostly related to the solitary protagonist which the first Portal was a lot like that. You felt alone(other than the untrustworthy AI). Valve have clearly tried to add a lot more other characters in their games(from Half Life 2’s cast of AI characters to the 4 player coop character of Left 4 Dead). I don’t think this means they are done with single player games, just that they want to move away from the solitary feeling that some parts of Portal 2 and most of Portal 1 made you feel.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River is now available in Europe. It will only be available in North America on June 7th. It’s not listed on local retailers or on Steam here yet, so I presume we will be getting the game in June. That’s quite a delay in release for the rest of the world. Either way, they’ve released a launch trailer for the game. 4 players, 4 different soldier roles take on coop campaign. I suppose if you play this solo, bots take over the role of your team members. With the Shoni army right at the doorstep of Buzen, Shimazu reinforced the region with more troops from Hizen. Natural Selection 2 Beta Gameplay Videos On YouTube From NaturalSelection2HD
Unknown Worlds RTS/FPS Hybrid, Natural Selection 2, currently in beta and available to those that pre order the game, is looking really good. If you’d like to watch some new beta gameplay footage, I found NaturalSelection2HD on YouTube to be an excellent channel to subscribe to. They keep you updated to the changes made in the game and post a tonne of new gameplay footage very often. They also do plenty of interview with the Unkown World guys for new info on the game. Crysis 2 Level Editor & SDK Coming In The Near Future - Cry Some More
Crytek announced that a level editor for Crysis 2 will be released early this summer(July'ish hopefully). Using the level editor, you can create new maps, levels, items for Crysis 2. Crytek also announced that they will be releasing a CryEngine 3 SDK in August. The SDK will allow you to actually build your own games and so much more(compared to the limitations of a level editor). From the site “It will be a complete version of the engine including C++ code access, our content exporters (including our LiveCreate real-time pipeline), shader code, game sample code from Crysis 2, script samples, new improved Flowgraph and a whole host of great asset examples, which will allow teams to build complete games from scratch for PC”. Sweet. The SDK will also be free and with opportunities to publish games you produce(you need to refer to their licensing site). Perhaps we can have someone do a Crysis 1 CryEngine 3 conversion. Good to see Crytek moving aggressively in this direction. Definitely following the Epic Games way of promoting their engine.
UPDATE: Fable III Coming To Steam - Not Available In Malaysia Though
UPDATE: Fable III on Steam is not available for Malaysia(or anyone else in this region). Currently only available for EU and North America.
A Microsoft published game on another digital distribution platform? Well that’s what they have announced. Lionhead Studios announced today that Fable III will be released on Steam as well as the Games For Windows live platform. Although they didn’t make it clear in the press release, I’m pretty sure it will still need Games for Windows live client to run on top of Steam. I think they realised that releasing it just on Games For Windows will be significantly restricting sales potential considering Steam’s dominance in the digital distribution realm. The game releases on May 17th. Lionhead has released this developer diary video to give you a peek at what they are doing for the PC version of Fable III. Developer Diary video below…
JoWooD Entertainment Confirmed To Be Closing Down
Austrian based game publisher JoWooD Entertainment will not be saved from insolvency. Based on this German report, all negotiations with potential investors have failed. JoWooD, well known for Euro centric PC games like the Gothic RPG series, AquaNox(under water FPS), Traffic Giant, The Guild and even Painkiller was in the news when they indefinitely put the expansion for Arcania: Gothic 4 on hold.
