Valve Says ‘YOU SHALL NOT PASS!’ - Steam Sales Data Won’t Be Handed Out

Jason Holtman of Valve Software said that it wasn’t important to chart digital distribution sales of PC Games. He added ‘The point is, it’s not super important for a publisher or developer to know how well everyone is doing. What’s important to know is exactly how your game is doing – why it’s climbing and why it’s falling. Your daily sales, your daily swing, your rewards for online campaign number three. That’s what we provide.’. Talking to MCV, he said Valve will not be handing out sales data to anyone to track digital sales.

Which is odd since he said that sales charts have always misrepresented PC sales “They apparently had shown how the PC format was dying when it was actually thriving.” he said. So Valve isn’t interested in tabulating digital sales figures to find out whose number one etc. He has a point about sales charts being an outdated form of statistics tracking. But surely there can be some advantage to having sales figures for titles online. Boo hoo Valve!

  1. Great, since there will be a lot less wanking around on online communities about how MY CONSOLE SOLD MORE GAMES THAN YOURS.
It's just like a primary school playground fight, only among manchildren caring about which electronic toy is better.

  2. Valve are basically saying "If you're game sells well, it shouldn't be in relation to other games".

They are of course tabulating this information, but it's only being given to the ones that would use it, that being the publishers and developers themselves.

Even if the figures were released, we're still going to get more FUD about "PC Gaming is dying" blablbalablabla, so it hardly seems like a big deal.
