UPDATE Impulse To Be Acquired By Gamestop - Indie Dev Pulling Game Off Of Impulse
UPDATE: Blind Mind Studios, the people behind the 4X space game, Star Ruler has confirmed they will be pulling off Star Ruler from Impulse once Gamestop has fully acquired Impulse. According to them, they will be ending sales due to "Gamestop's long, negative behavior toward the PC platform and independent games". Blind Mind Studios clarifies that customer who bought Star Ruler from Impulse will be able to get updates from their site and wont be abandoned. If more indies do this, I can see it being a bit of a PR problem for Gamestop. Of course there is also this whole issue of conflict of interest with Gamestop taking over. Doesn't Impulse directly compete with your brick and mortar business? Or they will be making all PC games only available on Impulse? Thanks to Kong Yew from Knights of The Cardboard Castles for alerting me to this.
In what I think is a total surprise announcement, Stardock announced that Gamestop(the brick and mortar game retailer) will be acquiring Impulse, Stardock’s digital distribution platform. Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock told Big Download that Stardock he did not desire to run a large company and Impulse has been generating more revenue. The offer from Gamestop came at the right time and that there will be no layoffs with this arrangement. All Stardock employess on the Impulse team will become Gamestop employees and will move operations to Dallas, Texas(Gamestop HQ). The acquisition is reported to be completed by this May and all Stardock titles will still be published on Impulse exclusively. Gamestop has been trying to get into the digital distribution business for quite a while now. This move will give them a much needed boost. Frankly, I’m not sure what to think of this news. Stardock claims everything will run the same, but for how long?

It seems that some game developers are unhappy with this too. The publishers of Star Ruler, a CCG-like game, has announced that they will cease providing support and patches to players who bought the game on Impulse once control switches to Gamestop.
ReplyDeleteWow. You're right. Blind Mind Studios has made a statement about this. But still they are just one team. If more indies drop out of this, it could have more impact.
