End of Nations Freeing Itself From Retail Pricing - To Launch As A Free To Play Game

Petroglyph has announced that their upcoming MMORTS, End of Nations, will be a free to play game. Based on the announcement, they claim that anyone can play all the different game modes, no restrictions. There will be a single player, a 50 player coop mode and even a Conquer The World multiplayer mode(26vs26). The game will come with an optional subscription option that subscribers "will get a significant amount of value and convenience extras for their monthly fee". The game will also get a physical collectors edition that will come with cool extras and digital bonus material. The game will have an in game store that will allow players to buy stuff that wont offer any significant gameplay advantage(it is not pay to win). Considering the amount of games going free to play, this I think is a good move by Petroglyph. Not to mention, the free to play segment has a bunch of qualitytitles now that western developers are jumping on this segment of gaming. Good news for gamers. Latest trailer and press release below...

Every End of Nations player will have full access to all the heart-stopping action-packed strategic warfare that the game offers, including massive scale battles of over 50 players, a huge persistent world, and customization options to make every army and unit unique. Gamers can play in the solo campaign, in co-op mode with up to 50 other players, and in “Conquer the World” multiplayer in giant conflicts of up to 26 vs. 26 for global control of the massive persistent world. There’s no time limit on access, and all players can play for free.

End of Nations is being developed with strategy gurus Petroglyph Games, the creative minds behind the original Command & Conquer.

Free-to-Play FAQ

Why does the free-to-play model make sense for End of Nations?
For a premium strategy game like End of Nations, we really wanted to bring as many players as possible into its massive-scale strategic warfare. And the more we looked at the enormous battles and huge persistent world, we realized that the success of End of Nations would be driven by having thousands of players from around the globe battling daily in the world’s biggest strategy game.

Is End of Nations going to be pay-to-win?
No. Core to the design of any successful strategy game is that all players are on a level playing field. It will not be possible for players to buy their way to success, where the player with the most money will win. End of Nations favors strategy and skill.

What does a free player get?
Free players get access to the entire game. The campaign, the 50+ person co-op, the “Conquer the World” metagame, the huge 52-player head-to-head multiplayer, everything.
Why are you offering a subscription?

The optional subscription is just a way to offer the best value to our most committed players. End of Nations can be enjoyed entirely without the subscription, but subscribers will get a significant amount of value and convenience extras for their monthly fee. The optional subscription is all about value, but not about gameplay advantage.

Will free players be level capped?
No, the free player will not be level capped or restricted from advancing and improving their units and armies.

What sorts of things will you be selling in the in-game store?
The in-game store will offer a wide selection of items, including customization and convenience items. We will not be selling pay-to-win items that give one player a significant gameplay advantage over another. Most items in the store will be purchasable with either End of Nations Wealth (currency earned in-game by playing) or with Trion Credits (purchased currency).

Will I need real money to play? Will I need a credit card to play?
End of Nations is truly free to play—so no money or credit card is needed to play or succeed. Most items in the store will be purchasable with either End of Nations Wealth (currency earned in-game by playing) or with Trion Credits (purchased currency).

Will there be a retail box? Will there be a Collector’s Edition?
There will be a Collector’s Edition for End of Nations available at retail. Expect it to be packed with a cool selection of both physical and digital extras! The Collector’s Edition will be the only “box” at retail, although we will also have End of Nations prepaid cards. We will also offer a digital version of the Collector’s Edition, with just the digital extras.
