Making History II IGN Interview

While Hearts of Iron III is clearly the most popular WWII grand strategy game, it is interesting to see another title of this genre in development. Making History II is(in the words of IGN’s Steve Butts) akin to a mix of a Garry Grisby’s game and a Hearts of Iron. IGN has a lengthy interview with lead designer,Ralph Gert from Muzzy Lane Software. If you like grand strategy games, this might be another title that you might want to keep an eye on.

IGN: The original game occupied the middle ground between Gary Grigsby's World at War and Paradox Interactive's Hearts of Iron. Have you adjusted the complexity of the game at all?

Ralph Gerth:
We've broadened the feature set and increased the amount of in-game content. You can now customize your city with many different building types, the tech tree is much bigger with many new military units, and we've added about a 1,000 new regions to the game map. To that extent you could say Making History II will be more complex but I think of it more in terms of greater depth with similar levels of difficulty. It's still fundamentally the same style of gameplay but with a lot more to offer. Structurally the entire game has been retooled including a brand new graphics engine for our 3D map.

Coming this fall, putting it in direct competition with Hearts of Iron III, it will be a busy time for World War II buffs. Read the entire interview here

Key Features

  • Play any nation on a beautifully rendered 3D world map
  • Hundreds of unique land, sea, and air units representing both major & minor powers of the era

Borderlands Video Previews

The internet is filled with previews of Gearbox’s Borderlands as embargo’s are lifted for the story. There are two main video previews of the game out there, one from IGN and the other is an interview of Randy Pitchford, head honcho of Gearbox from Gametrailers.com. Looks interesting so far and it definitely is more of a FPS with an RPG coating. Twitch and precision aiming actually matters.

Borderlands Trailer Shows The Funk!

Perhaps the first trailer of Borderlands since the art style change. The trailer goes through the features of the FPS/RPG hybrid. Trailer below:

Kosong Sen: Das Uber Leben

Haven’t done one of these for a while now. It’s hard to find a 2 player free/indie game and Das Uber Leben is a free game that support local 2 player. It’s a sky jumping arcade game where you free fall in unique environments and avoid obstacles and rack up a massive score while doing that.

  uberleben1

What I like about Das Uber Leben is the creative levels included in the game. There is a level on the Death Star(Star Wars) and other wild environments. The levels are quite challenging especially if you try to get the extra collectible points in the level and some of them are placed precariously close to obstacles.

 uberleben2

One splat and its game over. You only get one live so you have to be careful not to be too audacious with your attempts of going for the points. Das Uberleben is a perfect ‘filler’ game that you play in between other things. It’s a small game and costs nothing.

uberleben3

The game description:

Uberleben is a 1-7 player survival game in which your sky-diving plans go horribly awry. You must avoid the oncoming obstacles in order to reach your landing point. You can either try to survive with your friends or try to kick them to an icy death.
Version 3 has 6 levels total, another difficulty setting, and options for turning off blood (for younger audiences) and the replay feature (to make the game run faster). Now with spin!

Mysterious Package From Mark Meltzer

Today I received this parcel from a certain ‘Mark Meltzer’. At first I thought it must have been a mistake but the name sounded familiar. In the package was a record titled ‘Rapture Records’. It took a while but I figured out who Mark Meltzer was.

LatestPicture001 003

LatestPicture001 001

LatestPicture001 002

Mark Meltzer was the guy investigating the disappearance of little girls in Bioshock 2. I learned about this character from the teaser site ‘There is something in the sea’. Mark Meltzer is also looking for his own daughter that has mysteriously disappeared.

Upon inspecting the package I received, I found that the Rapture Records is the same one I found in the record player on the teaser site. The record has a Wagnerian song with these lyrics:

O rise, Rapture, rise,

We turn our hopes up to the skies.

O rise, Rapture, rise ,

Upon your wings our dreams with lie.

A city in the oceans deep ,

A promise that we'll always keep,

To boldly turn our eyes upon, the prize,

So rise, rise, rise.

O rise, Rapture, rise ,

We merrily sing this reprise .

O rise, Rapture, rise ,

To help us crush parasites, despised.

A city on Poseidon's floor,

A set of ideals we adore ,

A philosophy we all can emphasize,

So rise, rise, rise!

At the end of the song(which ends abruptly) a voice of a little girl is heard saying "Daddy? Where are you daddy? Are you going to come and find me?". This might be Marks missing daughter or any one of the other missing girls. Her voice sounds like a little sister and not quite human.

There are some mysterious numbers(a sort of code) on both sides of the record. I’m not sure if it means anything at all.

The site also introduces a new character called Orrin Lutwidge that owned companies that are shell companies owned by other entities. All these characters and documents are from New York which leads me to believe the kidnapping were mainly off the North Atlantic Ocean. All these incidents might clue us in on the location of Rapture.

Mark Meltzer is certainly being led by Lutwidge to uncover Rapture. In one of the notes it would seem like he even found some sort of key. Maybe to Rapture?

lutwidge

Surely the evidence looks clear. Mark Meltzer has to be convinced of Rapture and by now should know that such a city under the sea must exist. And in his desperation, has he ventured into Rapture to find his daughter? Or is the Daddy reference at the end of the record also a hint of the origins of the original Big Daddy? Is the Big Daddy connected to Mark Meltzer?

Star Wars The Force Unleashed Ultimate Sith Edition Announced

Since releasing it for the consoles last year(including the Wii), EA has insisted that they weren’t interested in doing a PC port of Star Wars The Force Unleashed claiming they would have to water down the gameplay experience to fit the wide range of system specs. Today at San Diego's Comic Con, Lucas Arts announced that an Ultimate Sith Edition will be ported to the Mac and PC. Bigdownload.com reported that the new version will include all three DLC’s released earlier for the XBOX360. More details below:

The first of the three additional single-player missions included in the Ultimate Sith Edition is set in the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant. In this mission, Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice turns to the Jedi Temple to learn more about his father, and while searching through the rubble of the destroyed building he must confront his inner demons.

The second extra mission continues the story of The Force Unleashed in a new "Infinities" storyline that takes the Star Wars Saga in an entirely new direction. The level begins at the end of the story of The Force Unleashed and re-imagines the Star Wars Saga as if the Secret Apprentice had taken Darth Vader's place at the Emperor's side, becoming the most powerful Sith Lord in the universe. The story picks up as the Emperor sends his new apprentice to Tatooine to dispatch Obi-Wan Kenobi – who has been hiding on the planet ever since the events of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. During their hunt for the reclusive Jedi, players will also explore the depths of Jabba the Hutt's palace and encounter notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett.

The final new level concludes the "Infinities" storyline set up in the Tatooine mission, as the Secret Apprentice is sent to the planet Hoth on a crusade to crush the Rebellion once and for all. While on Hoth, players face Luke Skywalker himself while visiting iconic locations seen in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

Left 4 Dead 2 ‘Swamp Fever’ Campaign Gameplay Videos

Gamespy has an exclusive reveal of the new campaign for Left 4 Dead 2 set in the swamps. In that article, it was revealed that Swamp Fever will feature a unique infected type(only in this campaign) called the Mudmen. It was also revealed a new special infected called the Spitter. Swamp gameplay videos below:

In Swamp the level-specific zombies are mud men: zombies who run on all fours incredibly quickly, making them hard to detect, and especially so when they're in a couple feet of water. This resulted in our team having to be hyper-vigilant when wandering through the bayou, watching the water the way that Han Solo and company did when facing the Dianoga in the Death Star trash compactor. During the not-so-quiet moments, like when we were trying to protect a teammate who'd been covered in Boomer bile, these little zombies could come out of nowhere, providing ample distraction for other infected to close the gaps on our defensive positions.

The Spitter -- whose graphic was still being worked on when I played -- can lob a ranged attack into a group of survivors, creating an area where survivors take damage so long as they are within it. No, the Spitter's shot won't do a ton of damage all at once, but it can hurt you badly after a few seconds spent in its area of effect, and can easily make a team panic and split up when it hits in the middle of a fight. Imagine you're in a room with your team and a Spitter lobs the shot through the window, forcing your team to abandon the position. Now imagine that as you all abandon this spot that some of you split off from one another -- perhaps exiting out of the room from two different sides -- leaving yourself open to attack.

RIOT GAMES TO BRING HIGHLY ANTICIPATED LEAGUE OF LEGENDS TO THE COMMUNITY FOR FREE

Riot Introduces Summoner System and Virtual Currency for Play Diversity, Customization and Novelty
LOS ANGELES — July 14, 2009 — Riot Games, an independent developer and publisher of premium online video games, has unveiled the Summoner and currency systems for its highly anticipated online multiplayer session-based game League of Legends. In a quest to make the title available to all gamers, and to support and reward a passionate community of competitive players, Riot has confirmed that League of Legends will be free. Optional payment will enable additional virtual currency to be used within the Summoner system meta game for play diversity, customization and novelty. League of Legends, which was nominated for the Game Critics Awards Best Strategy Game of E3, will be available for Windows PC in September 2009.

“One of our goals at Riot has been to set a high quality bar for core games that are available for free online as we believe that a relentless focus on delivering tremendous value to online communities will earn player loyalty,” Brandon Beck, co-founder and CEO, Riot Games, said. “League of Legends is being built as a highly competitive core game that we believe will change many people’s minds about the type and caliber of games that can be offered for free.”

A player in League of Legends takes on the role of a Summoner – a gifted spell caster who has the power to bring forth a champion to fight as his or her avatar in Valoran’s Fields of Justice. As the Summoner controls the champion in combat, it also influences the outcome of the match through the use of spells, masteries and runes. Once a match is over, the Summoner gains Influence Points and Riot Points.

Influence Points will be earned by simply playing the game, while Riot Points will be available for purchase with real money. Both currencies will be used to unlock additional content customization options, whereas only Influence Points will be used to unlock content such as Runes, which enhance the power of playable characters. The system is designed to empower the player with a huge number of mechanical choices that deepen the level of the strategic thinking in the game.

Bioshock 2 Delayed To 2010

IGN posted the bad news that Take-Two has released a press statement that says Bioshock 2 as well as Mafia II, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption has been delayed to their fiscal 2010 line up. No specific date was given. Take-Two CEO Ben Feder explains:

"The decision to shift a release date is never an easy one, especially with a product as highly anticipated as BioShock 2. We felt that it was essential to invest the additional time to ensure that this title will deliver what its fans expect and deserve," he said.

"As a result, we will now be launching sequels to several of our strongest franchises - including BioShock 2, Mafia II, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption - during the next fiscal year. These titles will anchor our lineup for fiscal 2010, and along with other products planned for next year, provide a platform for enhanced financial performance in what we hope will be an improved retail environment."

Alan Wake ‘Up In Airs’ For The PC

Since the E3 demo was shown, nothing was said about the PC version of Alan Wake. People assumed it was still in development considering the fact that Remedy Entertainment demoed the tech behind the game many years back for the PC. Brightfalls.net found out that:

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Remedy haven’t spoken about the PC version of the game yet and the release of a PC version is up in the air. When asked about it Remedy replied saying that both Microsoft and them are only speaking about the Xbox 360 version at the moment.

This is based off some info released in a Finnish magazine ‘Pelaaja’.It looks like the Spring 2010 release will be only for the XBOX360. I wonder if Remedy will look at making this a Windows 7 DirectX 11 title. Hmmmm

Command & Conquer 4 First Details

Gamespot posted an exclusive QA with C&C 4 designer, Samuel Bass. They are calling it 'a final chapter in the Tiberium saga'. It was hinted that the game will feature a class based game system and mobile bases. C&C 4 will be a PC exclusive and is set for a 2010 release.

EA plans to have the series go out with a bang because C&C4 will offer a ton of new stuff to play with, including co-op campaigns, a new class-based game system, persistent experience points, mobile bases, and five-on-five multiplayer. Designer, storywriter, and campaign lead Samuel Bass explains these new features and confirms that the game will have no digital rights management software.

Great plus that it wont use DRM. Read the entire QA here

MechWarrior Announced! A Series Reboot

IGN published first details of the much teased new MechWarrior game from Piranha Studios. The new game will simply be called ‘MechWarrior’ and will take place in 3015 during the third succession war. This places it before the lore of the first MechWarior game. Reveal trailer below:

The new game will feature more urban combat, a tighter storyline(sorry mercenaries fans), a co-op single player campaign and multiplayer. Piranha Studios(formed by key FASA guys) still hasn't got a publisher yet for the game so some things are still up in the air. While the trailer looks excellent(it uses Unreal Engine 3), it's a prototype and a very early build.
