UPDATE: Counter Strike: Global Offensive Confirmed!

UPDATE 2: Okay so the trailer I posted was shopped. It's not for CS: GO. It was a CS: Online trailer from 3 years back. I've removed it.

UPDATE: Valve has announced Counter Strike: Global Offensive for real! It is a new Counter Strike game with an updated engine and improved gameplay and all that. The surprise? It's going to be released on the consoles as well... on XBOX Live and PSN(and of course on the PC) targeted for early 2012. Which would likely mean this isn't going to be a free to play game. Oh well... a new and improved Counter Strike has been a long time coming, I'd be willing to pay for it. CS: GO is being developed by a Seattle based dev named Hidden Path Entertainment in cooperation with Valve(pretty much how Left 4 Dead was being developed... at least until Valve bought them). Press release after the jump...

There's new rumours surrounding a new Counter Strike game. According to the internetz, Valve is about to announce something called Counter Strike: Global Offensive. ESEA News wrote about this and claims that Valve are about to make an announcement about it real soon(today). The site points out that Jesse Cliffe, one of the original creators of Counter Strike posted on twitter that CS:GO will focus on 5v5 games and will be on an updated source engine. The new game will have new weapons and grenades as well as revamped classic maps like Dust and Aztec. They say the release date would be in Q1 2012. I can't verify this so don't get your hopes up. If this is true it doesn't sound like a sequel but more like perhaps a free to play variant maybe? Anyway, if this is true, an announcement from Valve should be coming real soon. Will update this post when new info is available.

Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.
