EDIT: Origin does indeed have an offline mode. If there is no internet connection it goes to offline mode automatically.
DICE confirmed rumours today that Battlefield 3 will indeed require an Origin account to play. Well... at least the retail version will require it. It's a little unclear about other digital distribution version and with the whole Steam impasse, I think wherever you buy the game, you'll need an Origin account. I've been using Origin for quite a while now and find it perfectly servicable. It's got all the necessary features, in game browser, friends list, games library, a store. However, it is missing an offline mode... which means you'll launch your games connected to the internet. I'll l update this post if there's new info regarding this.
