UPDATE EA Has Bought PopCap - Confirmation The Deal Went Through

UPDATE: It was a rumour. Now the rumour is official. It's a done deal. VG247 reports that EA has purchased PopCap for USD$750 million. Close to a billion, but not quite. PopCap PR Garth Chouteau said "We can work with a team at EA to do ports more quickly, more effectively,". The resources EA could contribute to things such as porting games and marketing could well propel PopCap even further. But me thinks this is mainly the founders cashing out. It's for the money. I'm not a huge fan of casual games but I would hate for PopCap to lose their studio identity if EA reigns in on them(which I think they won't). All the best to the PopCap guys.
PC Gamer is reporting that EA are planning to buy off one of the biggest(if not the biggest) casual game developer, PopCap. There are 'strong' indications that EA are in the final stages of negotiation with PopCap for a massive sum off USD$1 billion. PopCap official statement is "Per company policy, we do not comment on rumours and speculation of this nature." While the price tag is huge, getting PopCap into their stable of development studios would be a huge boost to EA. PopCap has been incredibly profitable with Peggle & Bejewelled becoming a huge IP to them. It's also ironic that EA are spending big bucks for the studio when PopCap approach them with an offer the sell of their biggest hit title when they were starting up and EA rejected them. This is still just a rumour so take it for what it is... just a rumour.
