Piracy Is Not Theft - Minecraft Creator Weighs In On Piracy

Nextgen.biz reported that Markus ‘Notch” Persson said in a closed session at the Indie Games Summit that he doesn’t see piracy as theft. “If you steal a car, the original is lost. If you copy a game, there are simply more of them in the world” he said. He further added that “There is no such thing as a ‘lost sale’”. He encouraged developers to look at pirates as not thieves but potential customers. He echoed the sentiment that games should be seen as services and not as static products.

Make a game last longer than a week. You can’t pirate an online account.” he said. I agree with him but I’m cautious about the attempts at jury rigging online components in single player game to increase longevity of the title(or inconveniencing gamers with online connectivity to play single player games). Case in point, Bioshock 2. Didn’t have to have a multiplayer portion. And I still appreciate and love single player only games. DLC’s are extremely popular now to extend single player games but I’m not a huge fan of them. They are usually very light on content for a much higher price(compared to the price of a retail game). What do you guys think?
