Q.U.B.E - Portalesque

Q.U.B.E is an Unreal 3 indie game by an outfit called Toxic Games. ‘Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion’ is a puzzle platformer that reminds me a lot of Portal in terms of how the levels are laid out and the aesthetics(also from the fact that it is in first person). It’s surprisingly good and polished for an indie title.

You start out in Q.U.B.E mysteriously on a stretcher. You hear a couple having a conversation, and you’re pushed into a white room. All very ‘out of body’ like experience. You don’t meet a man in white robes however. You are stuck in a white room made out of cubes wearing these white gloves.

In Q.U.B.E, each level consists of multiple puzzles that you must solve to unlock the portal to the next set of puzzles. The puzzles consist of manipulating coloured blocks that can be extruded to serve as platforms or some other smart puzzle mechanic. Left click pulls blocks out, right click pushes blocks in.

In some level there are timed blocks that only extrude for some amount of time before moving back in. Some other levels require you to get this ball into another block using other blocks around it to stop it from moving one direction to another.

There’s also a rubik’s cube like puzzle where you must move the blocks around to make it look like the diagram image. I haven’t figured this one out yet. I’ve seem to have made the blocks to look like the diagram but nothing would happen. If you found a way to solve this puzzle please do tell.

As I’ve describe in the title, it all very portalesque, which is a good thing. The puzzles are quite challenging and some of them require precise timing(especially once where you need to bounce up and extrude another block while up in the air). One of the better produced indie puzzle game this year.
