Age Of Empires Online Now Completely Free To Play - Except Microtransactions
Which makes their previous insistence that it's free to play rather confusing. Gas Powered Games, the developer behind Age of Empires Online, initially released new civilizations as paid content while 2 basic civilisations we always free for everyone. Eric Williamsontold, design lead said "We probably turned off a lot of players who would’ve kept playing had they been given the option to earn a Premium Civilization". Free to play now is still a misnomer, as Gas Powered Games now has made all content and civs available for everyone, except a lot of items are now available in the in game store. You use Empire points to purchase stuff and to entice new users, they are giving out 100 Empire points for newcomers. You can get Age of Empires Online here.

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission E3 2012 Demo Presentation
Can you imagine that the last post I made about Carrier Command was during last years E3. Now with this year's E3 just wrapped, Here's another look at Bohemia Interactive's Carrier Command: Gaea Mission. An RTS using the ArmA engine that has your typical RTS stuff with one difference... take control of any one unit on the battlefield. It's a shame it has been taking so long for this to come out. Carrier Command: Gaea Mission will be released in September 2012. Check out the demo video below...

Zombox Makes Zombie Killing... Boxy
Imagine Dead Rising, but just more... ermmm... boxy. Enter Zombox, an open world zombie survival game, well, human survival really but you are trying to survive in the zombie apocalypse. It's got a bit of buzz recently thanks to a single tweet from Minecraft creator, Notch, showing his anticipation for this game. The game features a procedurally generated city with NPC's that have missions and what not. The key wrd is survival, getting new stuff, and crafting better weapons. No release date yet, but the developer plans to release it for something dirt cheap like USD$2.99. Check out the preview videos below...

Sony Online Entertainment's Brian Bosch narrates this video that was part of their E3 presentation for PlanetSide 2. Far Cry 3 Delayed By Two Months - Releasing Late November
Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 3 will be delayed to November 29th in Europe and December 4th in North America. The open world shooter finally returns to the island setting of the original with a crazy antagonist who is hell bent on killing the protagonist. Far Cry 3 was originally due for September 4th. Dan Hay, a producer at Ubisoft had this to say "We're taking more time to create the best possible gameplay experience, Far Cry 3 is a huge offering and we want every element of this insane, action-packed adventure to be of the highest possible quality for the players." Hope this means they take the time of making an awesome PC version of the game.

Team Fortress 2 Meet The Pyro Incoming & Pyromania Update!
I haven't posted a Team Fortress 2 news for quite a while. Valve confirmed that they are indeed still on target for the release of Meet The Pyro video incoming on Wednesday! Valve are having a 3-day Pyromania event in game which will add a new game mode and map called Doomsday. In Doomsday, the RED and BLU teams celebrate the demise of the space simian poopy joe... I'm not kidding. Both teams will compete with each other to send in fuel through he preposterously slow elevators up the rocket that will recreate poopy joe's ill fated space flight. Perhaps we will have a Team Fortress 2 marathon soon. We haven't done one of those in a while. Team Fortress 2 is free to play now so you can grab it in the Steam page here.

Two New Company of Heroes 2 Screenshots Get Hot
Relic Entertainment has released two new screenshots of Company of Heroes 2. The sequel to the classic RTS game has players duking out the Nazis in the Soviet front near the tail end of World War II. This is where we see most of the monstrous powerful tanks during World War 2. The new screenshots show flame thrower action and some nice particle effect from tank guns. Panzer IV's vs T-34. From Noob To Pro: DOTA 2 Part 2 - A Tiny Problem
I've been rather busy the past few weeks. I've only managed to get a few games in... all using Tiny, a strength hero. Things are not looking good. My DOTA 2 regular buddies are saying I'm not playing Tiny well at all. I think I've improved over the previous weeks. I realise Tiny is quite fragile in the beginning and the only way to level up is to bash on creeps while they bash on your creeps... handy that. I admit that I have not read any guide to using Tiny or the best items to purchase as him. My bad...

Ground Branch Promises True Tactical Action - Kickstarter Campaign
I've been a huge fan of those old Rainbow Six games, not the new ones that drop the tactical phase for a more action oriented game. But games with a strong emphasis on tactics and coordination. BlackFoot Studios, a new independent studio formed by former Red Storm Entertainment and Valve Software peeps are bringing you Ground Branch, a new tactical first person shooter. I mean it is seriously realistic! Independent head movement from torso, interrupting reload cycles, physics that simulate inertia and body weight... insane stuff such as that. They are calling it a true spiritual successor to the original Ghost Recon game. The alpha footage looks really awesome. Certainly, there isn't that many games today with such a focus on realism. Ground Branch is on Kickstarter and needs to generate some USD$425,000 for it to be funded. If you like realistic tactical games like this, go here and help them out. Nuclear Union Announced - My Mind Has Exploded!
How about this... a post apocalypse party-based RPG in Russia, using the Men of War/STALKER graphics engine game. Essentially imagine STALKER RPG, I mean a proper RPG. Nuclear Union is being developed by Best Way and published by 1C Company. Interestingly the game is set in 2012, it's an alternate universe where the cold war went hot right after the Cuban missile crisis. Not much info on the gameplay yet and the trailer is more CG stuff. My curiosity is piqued though, as a Russian made Fallout'ish game with STALKER sensibilities is... tantalising. Nuclear Union is planned for a 2013 release. Trailer below...

UPDATE: Dark Souls Minimum System Requirements Out - No In-Game Voice Chat
UPDATE: Namco has clarified that Dark Souls will not support in-game voice chat and will not require a microphone headset. Hmmm now that I think about it... I wouldn't want idiots screaming at the top of.... oh nvm... that would have been fun.
August 24th is the day Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition is to be released on the PC. The steam page now lists a minimum requirement spec. Pretty decent minimum requirement with a 2.6 dual core processor as a minimum. What is notable is that multiplayer requires a microphone headset. There's also no mention of Games For Windows Live! which means... good news? Dark Souls is somewhat persistent in nature and it's notable for its multiplayer where you can see other players progress and deaths. Playing Dark Souls offline would be the most depressing experience ever... know that the game is super difficult with many, many one hit kills. Check out the minimum requirement and latest trailer below...

World of Tanks Update 7.4 Introduces French SPGs & New Battlegrounds
Wargaming.net put out a preview trailer of the upcoming update 7.4 for the free to play game, World of Tanks. The update will add new French SPGs(those artillery vehicles that act as battlefield snipers) and new maps. Airfield in particular looks good as it looks inspired by the North Africa battlefield during World War II. Also two new game modes are being added. Assault has you attacking an enemy entrenched position and destroying every single unit. Encounter only has one capture point in the centre of the map. If you haven't read our review, read it here. DOTA 2 Incoming Update To Add Tournaments & New Features For Competitive Teams
In a blog post on the official DOTA 2 blog, the DOTA team revealed that an update planned for this week will be adding new features geared to competitive play. A tournament view will be added to the in game client that will allow you to view upcoming and previous tournaments, also allowing you to purchase access to view them. Tournament organisers have a lot to cheer about here as they will be able to seamlessly integrate their content into the game. They will also be enabling better in game support for competitive teams. Expect profiles on players in the team, stats on teams with match history, even logo paint in bases. DOTA 2 has been announced to be a free to play game so no worries if you don't have access to the beta... but like all Valve games... who knows when it'll be out for good. My best guess is by this year.

PC Getting Dedicated Servers For Black Ops 2
Treyarch's Cesar Stastny tweeted that Black Ops 2 will have dedicated servers for PC. "Confirmed: Ranked Dedicated Servers for #BlackOps2". Since he announced it as ranked dedicated servers, I'm assuming it will have stats progression. Awesome! StarCraft II: Heart of The Swarm Nearly Done! 99% Complete
StarCraft II Lead Designer, Dustin Browder told Kotaku that the upcoming expansion for StarCraft II, Heart of The Swarm is 99% completed. He added that the last 1% is a bit of a 'bitch'. The missions and units are done and playable but the polishing and fine tuning is very difficult. "It’s the tuning and polish that really takes us a long time, and that’s where we get into the unknowns" he said. What this means is that it will be coming out in the year 2024(just kidding by the way). "Like we could do a play-through next week that we’re like, ‘Wow this is really great.’ Or we could do a play-through and we still have 250 items we wanna fix. You know, historically speaking we’re doing pretty well. We’re getting there. But I don’t know for sure yet when we’ll be done.". Blizzard hasn't put down a release date for the game, but based on Activision investor reports, the game is targeted for a late 2012 or early 2013 release. Thankfully, if you've missed this news, Blizzard has decided to ditch the whole restricting players to their region.

Bioware’s Magnum Opus – A Mass Effect Trilogy Overview
BioWare, masters of the branching storyline that is a hallmark of a great RPG, can rightly consider the Mass Effect series as their career-defining masterpiece; although a shout-out should be reserved for 2003’s seminal Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic. Mass Effect is a tale of intrigue, deceit, military might and a people trying to find their way in the galaxy they live in; this is science-fiction at its best.

Why SimCity Will Require An Always Online Connection
EA Maxis Vice President, Bret Barry explained the controversial decision to make SimCity require an always online connection for gamers. He said the main reason was because of the asynchronous multiplayer experience that would blend seamlessly to the overall playing experience. Imagine getting help from a friendly neighbouring city to deal with your energy issue, or problem with waste? Bob in Bob's Ville might be able to help. Then there's also some not so good thing like crime from a crime ridden ghetto neighbour spilling into your own cities. The bottom line is... for now... it seems like there is absolutely no way to play the game cut off from the rest of the world, offline single player is not in. EA Maxis wants you to play and build your cities in this huge worldwide network of SimCities and you have no choice. I sincerely hope Maxis can find some compromise and allow for some offline single player game.

OMGeek Board Games: It’s Cool And Hip To Be Gaming The Boards Now
I've recently gotten into board games again, and I thought it was simply a personal thing until I noticed that quite a handful of video game-related media has been giving ample coverage to board games as well. We’ve seen tabletop games like Confrontation, Blood Bowl, Ticket to Ride, and Memoir ’44 come out with electronic versions on Steam. Likewise, analog editions of popular video games like Gears of War and Sid Meier’s Civilization (ironically a title originally based on a board game) now exist. Read the full article here

UPDATE Payday: The Heist Devs Working With Valve Not On Left 4 Dead Prequel
UPDATE: Valve's Chet Falishek quashed this rumour by stating that while Overkill are collaborating with Valve, it is not Left 4 Dead prequel. So no Left 4 Dead prequel.
PC Gamer posted that a 'reliable source' has confirmed with CVG that Overkill Software, developers of Payday: The Heist, a Left 4 Dead type bank heist co-op shooter are working with Valve on a new game. The big news is that it's not any game... but a Left 4 Dead prequel. That could be rather interesting. It is interesting to note that Valve's absence from E3 might mean that this game might be some ways off from an announcement. Apparently the game will tell the story of the zombie outbreak and will blend the gameplay from Left 4 Dead and Payday. Overkill are also working on a sequel for Payday: The Heist.

Hitman: Absolution Game Director Apologises For Latest Trailer
Remember that game trailer that was released just before E3? The one depicting some sexy nuns who were actually assassin's out to kill Agent 47, getting murdered by 47? That caused some controversy. Tore Bylstad told an audience at E3 "We’re sorry that we offended people. That was truly not the intention of the trailer." According to Tore(that's an awesome name), the Attack of The Saints trailer will actually be a scenario in the actual game. The Nun assassin's are sent by the agency to kill 47(for whatever reason). Of course the CG trailer only showed one possible outcome of what could happen... which was 47 killing every single one of them.
That isn't how Hitman games normally work anyway... there are multiple ways to finish missions. The trailer was also picked I think mainly for hypersexualised imagery and violence. I have no issues with that but with the accusation of exploitation being thrown around... that the trailer is a cheap exploitative marketing stint for the male demographic, younger gaming audience... it gets to my nerves a bit more. Surely sexy nuns in skin tight outfits isn't so practical in the first place. I didn't like it much. What about you guys? The trailer a bit much? Or hot air over nothing? The offending trailer below...

E3 2012: Medal of Honor: Warfighter Gameplay Demo
The FrostBite 2 powered Medal of Honor: Warfighter is looking pretty cool, but the big question is how does it play? The gameplay demo is from a singleplayer missions and displays some amazing destructible cover that we've been so familiar with in Battlefield 3. E3 2012: Resident Evil 6 Gameplay Demo - Zombies Always Need Killin'
I missed this one which was shown during the Microsoft press conference. I'm sure this is a hugely anticipated title for most of you and going by this gameplay demo... disappointing. The sixth in the series and nothing stood out. The action was a bit more fluid with execution moves and all that, but the environment was bland and not engaging in anyway. This is only a small slice of the game so I'm not going to judge the whole game to be a turkey. The reason why Resident Evil 4 is still a classic is because it gave us something new... new environment, new mechanics which made sense. I hope this is just a poor demo and the game will be a lot better. Resident Evil 6 releases 2nd October of this year. Check out the gameplay demo below...

World of Battleships Trailer Débuts With Some Explosive Naval Action
Wargaming.net has been on a role lately with the widely popular World of Tanks, then World of Warplanes(which is n beta) and now World of Battleships. They seem to be knocking out these free to play games at an alarming rate. It has been stated that their goal is to have a meta game that bridges all the game together at some point(like some massive world war with tanks, planes and battleships. No ETA on release date yet. Check out the début trailer below(it's CG)...
