Aliens: Colonial Marines Authentic Aliens Trailer - Ridley Scott's Vision In Game Form
There's a new trailer for Aliens: Colonial Marines that is exclusive on Machinima. This trailer looks behind the scenes with the people in Gearbox Software talking about their inspiration and influence in making the game. It's mostly an interview with gameplay footage interspersed in between(most of it, I've seen). I'm super pumped about this game, as a huge Aliens fan... can't freaking wait. Aliens: Colonial Marines releases 12th February 2013. Trailer below...
War of The Roses Ranged Unit Trailer Shows How Snipers Work In The Medieval Period
Fatshark's War of The Roses is looking rather good. For those looking for a multiplayer shooter/action game not set in the tired old modern day setting, how about the medieval times? This trailer showcases ranged units in the game which carry weapons such as the crossbow or bows. There is bullet drop or rather arrow drop in the game depending on the weapon so it requires a bit of finesse in aiming. Beta sign ups are in progress and you can sign up in the game's official site here. The game is due out later this year(no specific date yet). Trailer after the jump...

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Releases September 18th & Will Feature Cross Platform Co-op
Beamdog's Trent Oster tweet's that the upcoming Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition will support cross platform play. "Bgee will have co-op multiplayer and will work across platforms. iPad can play with Android, Mac and PC. One happy gaming family". Yes!!! Baldur's Gate on the iPad?! Not sure how well the controls will work though. The official site lists that the game will be out on September 18th and will be priced at USD$19.99(pre-orders get save USD$2). This is completely digital without the requirement of any download client(you will be able to download it off of their site when it's available). The Enhanced Edition will feature 3 new characters, a new adventure, new player voice sets, with over 400 improvements over the original game. It's not just a high-res graphical bump up. Which is nice to know they are putting in a lot of effort into it. Baldur's Gate II Enhanced Edition will be released much later after this one. Screens below...

Patrician IV Not A Review - I Chug Away In A Sea Of Monotony
I didn't splurge much on the recent Steam Summer Sales, but what I did spend on included The Witcher 2 and this rather odd and not so popular trading strategy game. Patrician IV was released back in September 2010 and has ever since been on my wishlist for quite a while. I've preferred the Port Royale series and the Patrician series has always seemed lacking in a soul to me and was a very formulaic calculative type of trading game. That wasn't going to stop me from trying it out when it was on sale... so I purchased it out of impulse.

Paradox Announces Impire - Build Dungeons Kick Hero Arse
Paradox Interactive has announced another one of those spin off games from the Majesty universe(they've had a few of those lately) called Impire. What's interesting about this one however is the fact that it's a Dungeon Keeper inspired strategy game. This means building your own dungeons and defending it against invading heroes. The cool bit... it has co-op; play the campaign with a friend. Impire is being developed by Cynide Studios and is due for a Q1 2013 release. Check out the announcement trailer and press release below...

DICE Details Battlefield 3 Aftermath - Fight In Earthquake Affected Tehran
A page on the official Battlefield site details the Aftermath DLC for Battlefield 3. The DLC will focus on urban warfare in Tehran after the earthquake has devastated the terrain(four new multiplayer maps). "Set amongst the shattered districts, streets and surrounding villages of a post-earthquake Tehran Battlefield 3: Aftermath depicts a continuing struggle for supremacy and survival amongst the devastation. With operational capacity severely compromised the opposing forces must adapt and engage in vertical and horizontal urban combat amongst the dust and rubble with cracks and fissures in the terrain providing unexpected cover and paths to objectives. Additional support comes in the form of heavily modified troop transports and civilian vehicles specially adapted to deliver deadly force to the enemy." A new game mode will be introduced to the game(no info on what exactly it is) as well as your usual new dogtags, assignments and achievements. No specific release date for Aftermath but DICE has said previously it is due by the end of this year. Armoured Kill is due in September and if you haven't watch the recently released gameplay trailer, you should watch it here.

Dishonored 'Daring Escapes' Gameplay Trailer - 3 Abilities To Solve A Conflict
Bethesda and Arkane Studios Dishonored is turning out to be a real cracker. The game(at least what they've been telling us) is filled with different ways to complete missions and objectives. It's harkens back to the old Deus Ex days and Thief games except in this cyberpunk Victorian alternate reality world. In Boyle's Mansion, you're in a bind and the guards are onto you. Arkane Studios demonstrates three supernatural ability available to Corvo to get out of trouble. Blink allows Corvo to slow time and get to far to reach places, Bend Time does what it says and slows time and you can use a crossbow with sleeping medicine to make enemies go to sleep and possession does what it says... possess anything, even a fish! Dishonored releases October 9th and I can't wait. Watch the gameplay trailer below...

Darksider II 'Death Comes To All' Gameplay Trailer - PC Specs Released
THQ has put out the first all gameplay trailer for Darksiders II. It has been announced recently that the game has been delayed to August 2012(which is soon). The art style looks really cool and a jump of from the first game. Some of the enemy design reminds me of Tyranids from Warhammer 40k. Vigil(the developers) has also released the minimum and recommended specs for the PC version. Not the most demanding game, but requires 20GB of your hard drive. New Company of Heroes 2 Screenshots Get Icy
Like really icy and cold. We knew it would be since it is taking place in the eastern front, the frozen barren lands of the Soviet Union. The super cool feature is that your infantry will actually freeze to death if they are left on their own. Making heat source a valuable resource. You'll have to build campfires and move troops around to give them warmth. Apart from this, thin sheets of ice will crack and will take down heavy tanks that try to cross frozen rivers or lakes. I must admit, this is taking the whole meaning of realism, to a whole new level. Company of Heroes 2 is targeted for an early 2013 release. I'm really looking forward to this. Dota 2 'The Asia' LAN Tournament Announced - To Be Held In Malaysia
E-club, alongside Rapture Gaming and Alienware will be organising a 6 team LAN tournament for DOTA 2. The tournament will be held at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, Malaysia this 8th to 9th December. It will also be offering a USD$30,000 prize pool... I kid you not! The Asia will feature countries from around South East Asia(including Malaysia yay!) as well as Japan, India, Australia/New Zealand and China. Those of you craving for some competitive DOTA 2 action in Malaysia have your wishes fulfilled. December is still a ways off, but I'll definitely be there.

Taking Over The World One Region At A Time - Why I Love Strategy Games
When I play my favourite strategy games and feel like a conqueror(it doesn't come with the side effect of guilt and bad press mind you) taking over a map, it feels good and satisfying. No shame in admitting that... although that's not to say I'm a secret megalomaniac or something. Hey, it's good fun! Besides, it's good practise for real life. As long as you don't end up being a megalomaniac.

Sins of A Dark Age Vallamere Hero Trailer - Here's A MOBA Game With A Twist
Ironclad Games has released the first trailer showcasing a hero in Sins of A Dark Age. Not to be mistaken with the 4X RTS Sins of A Solar Empire, Sins of A Dark Age is a MOBA RTS hybrid, much like DOTA. But with a twist. There is a player who is the commander. The commander builds the base and creeps while the heroes fight it out in the front lines. It a team based multiplayer game that blends DOTA with an RTS. The first hero they are showcasing, Vallamere is a knight, you can say he's a tank and a warrior that can take on the enemy head on. Check out the trailer below...

Ubisoft Shows New DLC For Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - But No PC DLC Yet
Initially when Ubisoft announced Future Soldier, this was supposed to be a console only title. But you know what they say about the video game industry... ermm... nothing really... but things change. Now Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is available for the PC. Unfortunately the DLC they have been advertising has only been available for the XBOX360 and PS3. Boohoo Ubisoft! To be fair though this is a multiplayer DLC and perhaps the multiplayer infrastructure for the PC has not been properly set up. But why? Why port a game if you choose not to release DLC to support it? The Artic Strike DLC adds a new stockade multiplayer game mode, which... if you're on the PC, you will have no idea about this. Heroes of Newerth South East Asia Increasing Free To Play Hero Pool
The announcement by S2 Games that Heroes of Newerth will now have all heroes available for free to everyone is indeed a good move in the right direction. These MOBA games are really competitive and restricting heroes to free and paid customers does some what limit the strategic aspect of the game. Regardless, Heroes of Newerth in South East Asia is being handle by Garena and changes meant for the international(Europe and North America) audience don't always translate to our region. Garena has clarified on their own Heroes of Newerth page that for patch 2.6.11, the free to play hero pool will be increased from 20 to 30(so we wont be getting all heroes for free... just quite yet). This patch will go live on 25th July and there will be a price cut on premium heroes. With the competition heating up on the MOBA front, I believe this is a necessary move, but it's a shame we still don't get all heroes for free over here in South East Asia.

The War Z Announced - What's The Fuss With Zombie Apocalypse Survival Games?
It's the zombie apocalypse and survival is the key word. The War Z, an upcoming zombie apocalypse survival horror MMO, by Hammerpoint Interactive. This is rather interesting since the popularity of the Arma 2 mod, Day Z has reached a fever pitch level, here we have a developer announcing a game called War Z with very similar themes. According to the executive developer, Sergei Titov, The War Z has been in development since last fall, before the alpha release of Day Z and is planned for a Fall 2012 release. Day Z for those not in the know is a very popular mod for Arma 2. It places players in a zombie infested island with the sole goal of surviving with the bare minimum. Scavenge, team up and survive... that is the overall theme. The War Z doesn't differ from that and in an IGN interview, the developer says the difference is that Day Z is a mod for a hardcore military simulator while the War Z is a standalone game with the entire world set in a zombie apocalypse...right... not too convincing guys. The War Z will be priced at USD$30 and will have no subscriptions. Going to wait for this before I can say if this will be anywhere as good as the mod.

UPDATE: Torchlight II Release Delayed - Runic Games Still Planning For A Summer Release
UPDATE: Designer, Travis Baldree told Joystiq, that they are working hard to try to get it out by this summer. "The end of summer is September 25th or something like that, right? We're still trying to get it done for summer. It's a big game and we've still got some polish to go." he said. This does not mean it will definetely be out this summer... it's done when it's done they say and there is no definite release date yet. He clarified that they have not reached a point in development where they can announce a release date yet. I really hope this makes it this summer. Longing for a good action RPG.
In a post in the Runic Games forums, Travis Baldree explained why they still haven't set a definite date for the release of Torchlight II. Based on feedback and input they got from the beta, it seems Runic are hard at work balancing the game and we are probably not going to get Torchlight II very soon(still at least in my opinion, this year). The biggest balances changes will be on the skill system which is not your usual skill tree but one where you can select any skill except some skills are level restricted. They want to make all the skills cool and worth the extra investment and move passive skill to its own screen. The full breakdown of improvements to be done is on the very lengthy post by Travis on the Runic Games forums here. I've pre-ordered Torchlight II and seeing their commitment to making an awesome game, I don't regret it one bit. You can read my impressions of the Torchlight II beta here.

OMGeek Reviews Resonance
With its pixelized presentation and point-and-click interface, it’s easy to dismiss Resonance as just another retro indie effort — a game riding on the recently-fueled nostalgia trip brought on by the Kickstarter craze, aimed at older gamers who pine day in and day out for days long gone. I think I’m one of those old gamers, too. I can totally imagine why some people will not “get” this game at first glance. I mean that in the least condescending way possible.
Happily, Resonance is not just another half-assed throwback wrapped in a badly written plot. There really is enough in this game to get people excited for traditional adventure games once again. Read the full review here.

Hitman Absolution Streets of Hope Gameplay Demo - Agent 47
Yipee!(okay kinda childish, not going to say that ever again) Eidos knows what we want... we want more gameplay demos of Hitman Absolution! Street of Hopes is a level within Hitman Absolution where Agent 47 must eliminate 3 members of the 'Cougar' gang. The level has some nice post processing effects with dandelion floating about. The 'instinct' mechanic(where Agent 47 can see through walls, detect other characters and his target) does make things a bit easier, but it removes the frustration of needing to open the map to locate your target. This just makes you more immersed in the game without opening up User Interface menus. Check out the bit where he looks like he's going to kill an innocent lady. Gameplay demo below...

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs Delayed - Now Set For Early 2013
Dan Pinchback, Creative Writer for thechineseroom(developers of Dear Esther) and currently working in collaboration with Frictional Games on Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs has stated in an interview with GameZone that the much anticipated Amnesia follow up has been delayed. Originally intended for a Halloween release this year, the game has been pushed back for an early 2013 release. "It's just slid back to early 2013. The quality of the game is the absolute first, last, and always with this development, and we felt it could do with a few more months' work to make sure that's really going to happen," he said. Those of you looking forward to a new Amnesia game will just have to make do with waiting a bit. But... it should be worth it.

Call of Duty Black Ops II Villain Trailer - Introducing Raul Menendez
The latest trailer for Black Ops II introduces the antagonist in the game. Raul Menendez is a messiah gone mad. He has control of all the computerised robots and is hell bent on wiping the map clean. Medal of Honor Warfighter Multiplayer Gameplay Trailer Looks Insane
The first gameplay trailer for the multiplayer portion of Medal of Honor Warfighter has gone live. Moving to FrostBite 2 Engine was worth it as this just looks stunning. Visually I would say it goes above what I've seen in Battlefield 3, but noting that this should be a smaller multiplayer map, they would be able to scale things up a bit. It certainly doesn't look to be doing exactly what battlefield 3 is doing and obviously the focus is on smaller scale combat with kill streaks and what not... ala Call of Duty. Medal of Honor Warfighter release October 23rd. Check out the multiplayer trailer below...

Microsoft Confirms Windows 8 Releasing This October
On a side non gaming news(but news that will definitely be relevant to us PC gamers), Microsoft has announced that Windows 8 will be releasing this October. This is not the launch date mind you, but the release date of the RTM version, which is the Release To Manufacturing version. What happens is this version is given to system manufacturers, tech sites, reviewers and IT professionals/programmers etc before the actual consumer launch date. Microsoft VP, Rami Teller informed the audience during the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference of the RTM release of Windows 8. Not a major leap from Windows 7 certainly with a strong emphasis on touch surfaces, you'll still be able to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 for what they quote to be USD$15 for North America(I am uncertain if this is the equivalent price for the upgrade that we must pay for the South East Asian region). I'm sure nearer to release we'll see all sorts of performance comparison between windows 8 and 7. Are any of you thinking of upgrading to Windows 8?

Dear Esther Review - Poetry In Motion
A review of Dear Esther would be impossible without a discussion about what a video game is. Are video games simply experiences? Or is it the interactivity that makes something... a 'game'. This makes this particular review challenging since Dear Esther is quite clearly an experience that has very little(if none at all) interactivity. First for some background. Dear Esther was a Half Life 2 mod that has been developed into a standalone experience recently by thechineseroom(the modders that have turn game designers).
Steam Greenlight Announced - Vote For Your Choice Of Indie Games On Steam
Valve announced a new system on their digital download service, Steam. Steam Greenlight will allow the Steam community and users to give their thumbs up on indie game that have not been released on Steam to be added to the Steam catalogue. Essentially users will be green-lighting games featured on Steam Greenlight to be on Steam. This hopefully would speed up the process of deciding which indie title will be published on Steam. There has been some criticism lately of Steam's rather slow process of decision making regarding indie titles, as well as the quality of some of the cheap low budget indie games on Steam. I love the way Valve are approaching this by allowing the community to give they say. Giving us a voice in telling them what games we want to play(there is an option to submit games not on Steam Greenlight in this system too). This however, is not to say that Valve will not be having their own internal submission evaluation process, but I hope this would alleviate the time it takes for this entire process and help the indie developers who have been frustrated by... Valve time.

Well according to the info, players will have to manage supplies, food and ammo will be scarce, making it more of a survival game... which is something we don't see often in the first person shooter format. Why am I not excited? It's from Activision and if they decide to mess things up, they could just make it a run and gun shooter. In all fairness this is being developed by Terminal Reality which has BloodRayne under their belt as the highest profile game they've ever made. In The Walking Dead: The Game, players play through the story of Daryl Dixon and his brother Merle as they journey through Georgia to get to safety in Atlanta. Zombies will hunt on sight, sound and smell and you'll have to choose to fight them or avoid detection using stealth. The Walking Dead: The Game is due out in 2013. Watch the teaser trailer below...

Battlefield 3 'Matches' Feature Will Serve Competitive Teams Better
In a post detailed in Battlefield Blog, DICE unveiled plans for a new update on Battlelog that will add a 'matches' feature. You'll be bale to team up with friend and squad(platoon members) and set specific match details and time to reserve play on a server. The blog post gives a step by step account of the process of creating a custom match using this new feature which is bound to please the hardcore competitive team player. A note, you obviously have to be renting a dedicated server to be able to access these options.

DICE - FPS Genre Getting Stale
Speaking the Edge Online, DICE General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson claims that the FPS genre is stagnating. "If they(FPS gamers) don't see some kind of new, if not revolutionary then at least evolutionary, step of rendering in every game they will start to lose interest. And I think that is what's happening. Because a lot of franchises out there don't take this seriously; to actually make sure that we don't just challenge ourselves on the gameplay aspect, or perhaps some other area like distribution method, but also how it [feels], how it looks and how it sounds." he said. And guess what franchises is he talking about.
He further adds "I think we're going to start seeing people moving away from the modern setting, because every now and again settings or themes start to get stale and then everyone jumps over,". Also this: "But it's a bit cheap to just say, 'Okay, we're going to switch and go back in time or into the future and that will be innovation'. It will definitely drive the franchise forward for whatever game, but it's not true innovation, it's more a thematic change that has a perceived value to the gamers out there.", clear as a day what he's referring to here. I think it's a point we gamers have known and many reviewers and commentators have stated the modern military FPS is just getting way too stale and needs some sort of revolution. I don't think any development studio has the answer though to how this genre can evolve and DICE's focus on technology might be... mind blowing at first, but graphical innovations aren't going to help when there is a tonne of generic modern FPS. What do you think? Are FPS gamers happy with just technical innovation? Or do we need more?

Activision Announces Call of Duty Online For The Chinese Market
With EA, probably the biggest competitor to Activision already on the free to play market, Activision has been rather slow to adopt free to play as a business model. I would equate that to the Call of Duty games making billions for Activision. If people pay, why bother doing free to play right? But even mighty Activision can't ignore a sizeable market(aka money pile) in the form of free to play games. Call of Duty Online which is being developed by Activision Shanghai and Raven Software will be your usual first person 'action' game with micro transactions. They have a partnership deal with Chinese Internet company, Tencent. Call of Duty Online will be completely localised for china so don't expect it to hit other regions any time soon. I thin kthere is also the question of Activision fearing that it might eat into profits for retail blockbuster Call of Duty titles, if people can play a version of Call of Duty for free. That might be a problem. Trailer below...
