Guild Wars 2, the big hitter MMORPG from ArenaNet & NCsoft has sold a
total of 2 million copies. And that's just after 14 days past release day. ArenaNet President, Mike O’Brien stated “We’re continually
fine-tuning the game to deliver the polished experience our players expect, and
we’re already working on new adventures and experiences to introduce into this
truly dynamic online world.”. There is no doubt that Guild Wars 2 had huge amount of hype and backing to it. Publishers NCsoft has pumped in a lot of money for the marketing campaign and development of the game. In comparison, Bioware's Star War's The Old Republic only managed 1 million copies a week after launch even with EA as backers. Guild Wars 2 is definitely evidence that the MMORPG market is not entirely over saturated. The business model plays a huge role and whether subscription based MMO's are a thing of the past, I do not know(Guild Wars 2 has no subscriptions, just purchase the game and play like any other game). What is certain though is that it's getting more difficult to rationalise a subscription based MMO these days.
